Picked my 993 up from the garage last Wednesday, after spending £400 to get a dent knocked out that some scroate had put in a car park.

And, hurrah, spun it in the wet on Sunday, hitting one of these wire central reservation barriers (fortunately at a low speed, I was just coming off a roundabout).

The bad news is that the bumper is more badly damaged than it looks at will have to be replaced. Garage (fairly reputable one) is quoting circa £750 for a new front bumper, with a further £100 for the small skirting along the bottom. Total bill inc parts and respray = £1,364. Ouch. Can't afford to claim on my insurance or I'll lose 5 yrs NCB so it's coming out my pocket.

Don't suppose that anyone knows of a spare 993 Carerra 2 bumper just lying around do they, perhaps off a car with some bad rear end damage. Car is a '94 LHD model in what I think is polar silver.

All help appreciated.....

Try Douglas Valley Car Breakers, they specialise in breaking exotic cars, might even have one in your colour.

Thanks for that.

I've given them a call but nothing in unfortunately...comment along the lines of "Hmm, very rare parts for that model, hard to come by...."

Damn!

why not upgrade to a an RS front spoiler while you're at it?

A company like Design 911 will either have upgrade parts at reasonable prices (normally OPC parts) or they may have taken in old bumpers p/x.

Sorry to hear of your spin.

Thanks Domster.

I'm not that keen to upgrade the bumper as I quite like the unadorned look of the Carerra 2 (he says not being able to afford a 993TT...) You don't have any photos that you could give me a link to, do you?

Oh, and would you happen to have a web address or telephone number for Design 911?

Again, thanks.

Design 911's website is:

www.design911.co.uk

He may have some standard bumpers taken in p/x.

FYI

Example of 993RS front spoiler (actually conversion of a standard 993 bumper):

Example of GT2 front spoiler for 993 (too much in my opinion!):

RS skirt is OK on the right body but probably a bit too showy for the standard Carrera body on my car.

If you're paying for it yourself, you can get a *hell* of a lot of repairs for a grand. Surely you can get it stuck back together and repainted for a fraction of that if you take it to a friendly specialist and make it clear it isn't an insurance job?

The problem's not so much sticking it back together, it's more the fact that the frame for holding in the front (fog?) lights and indicators is completely shot on one side, which means that the lights just refuse to stay in.

I've had a work with Design 911, and they can do me a 2nd hand 993 Carrera f/bumper for £295 + VAT. In silver too - I'll just need to see if I can get the garage to cancel their order for the new bumper!

Has anyone else used second hand parts before? I'm assuming that as it will be getting resprayed anyway, any small scratches or chips will be sorted...?

Scottster (forum member but on holiday this week) recently bought some 993RS wheels unseen from Design 911, and they were as described - no nasty surprises.

However, I would always get second hand parts filled where necessary, prepared and then painted. Any good little paint shop could do that, although the preparation is crucial, so investing in filler, wet and dry and elbow grease before you take it in for spraying can be wise. That way you guarantee it is perfect, and they charge you half as much for painting it.

PS Good price on the bumper, eh! We got Scottster's dad into trouble once when we found him a power steering pump for a 944 for about a third of the price of what the OPC were charging, and he had to cancel his order.

Scottster did buy some 'unseen' wheels for his 993 yes, but the promised 'correct 993 offset' was in fact correct for a wide bodied 993, not the standard so a little pissed off - mind you, they were very cheap and in good condition. I can only blame myself for the wheels, sort of thing I should know better than to take the garage's word for and check myself.

I've seen tonnes of bumpers (PUs as they'll often be called) for about the £250-£300 mark second hand.

ps: Back off hols now after doing about 1,500 faultless miles in the 993 round France. Lots of fun being on the 'right' side of the car for once

Scottster - thanks for that!

Just picked it back up from the bodyshop and the new (2nd hand) bumper looks great. Brand new in fact. The guys in the garage said the thing looked brand new when it came in, quick respray, and you'd never know the difference.

Saved, I reckon, £400 by doing that.

I'll buy you a pint sometime (obviously, being a Scot, I'm just hoping that you'll never visit Edinburgh to collect....Ah, the joys of the internet!)
