Some random shots from the Northumbrian Coast - C&C welcome!

Guys,

I'm looking for hints and tips to build up my skills, I would say I'm a budding amatuer, but I'm really keen to move my photo's to the next level.

Shot with a 500D using mainly a EF 50 f/1.4 USM and a EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM for when I need some more range.

Sadly the only editing I have managed to do with these pics has been with the basic Windows Live Photo Gallery settings (contrast, brightness, highllights, shadows etc etc)

So, here are the pics - as I say, C&C is very much welcome

Some nice shots in there, my initial impression is that a lot of them are a bit dark... How are you shooting? AV, full M?

I like to composure in all of them. Some of them seem very 'over cooked' though.

To answer a few questions...

I'm shooting in manual mode, but I find myself looking at the settings suggested by the auto / non flash setting and then replicating in manual so I can pin point the focus points etc, I get mixed results and then edit the colours / exposure as a result.

I'm finding it quite frustrating as I feel my composition is usually spot on

Only comment would be that the black levels are overdone, which is killing any shadow detail. Obviously this might be the effect you're going for, but if you're shooting RAW, get the pics into Lightroom and have a look.
