Hi,

Being a Porsche convert myself with a Cayman S that is now just over a year old, I may be a little biased. However, my Dad (in his 60s) is thinking about getting a convertible sports car and has a Boxster on his potential list (as well as MX5 and other usual suspects).

He just wants it as a weekend / fun second car so doesn't want it to cost him the earth. What do you think the realistic chances are of getting a half-decent one for 7-10k. I seem to remember a thread about major engine badness but I can't seem to find it using PH search. He's not too bothered if it's an "S" or not and would prefer a manual one.

Any tips or suggestions (or advice to leave well alone at this money!).

Cheers
Steve

Loads of decent Boxsters at this price point - mine included :-) Read the poverty pork thread.

Depends on his aversion to risk. For the same money, the MX-5 will be newer and almost totally bulletproof for at least another 5 years. The Boxster might prove very expensive very quick or not. To quote Clint Eastwood - "Do you feel lucky?"

My wife ran an MX5 for twelve years and the only expense was petrol. She says we have totally lost the plot when it comes to spending money on cars and if you've never had an MX5 - they are just as much fun as any Porsche. Not as fast, not as manly, but easily as much fun.

You're right - she knows nothing. I just wish my running costs were closer to hers!

Funnily enough, Mrs JW911 has just acquired a 2.7 987 as she thinks the MX5 is too girly!

Do your research and get an inspection by an expert (unless you can do it yourself) and you could grab yourself a bargain for under £10k.

OPC inspection is circa £200 and they can put a warranty on the car and give the person that pays for the inspection the report .

I know it is a little more money at £13950 but Porsche newcastle have an approved car which will come immaculatley prepared, with 2 years approved warranty, that will be worth a look!

Yes - the manual midnight blue one...

BUT, I think you will find it DOES NOT come with the OPC warranty.

Dads Boxster S (986) was bought for £9500. Absolutely mint, had 28,000 miles and had been pampered and kept in what looked like a showroom all it's life.

I'm sure you'll get a very nice standard 986 in that budget too.
