Basically I'm a 22 year old student/part time worker. I've been driving a 2001 1.0 Yaris since I passed my driving test and right now I hate the car with passion. Don't get me wrong, the car has treated me well and during these 5 years I've never had it break down on me (touch wood) but the lack of power, the general lack of "street cred" specially for a guy driving one and also the fact I've had it for 5 years and I'm simply bored from it right now.

I have a budget of 4 grand. My first choice of car is a Mini Cooper but tbh with that money I could never find a decent one so I kinda gave up on that. Also anything above 1.6 would kill me on the insurance as I've been getting quoted of 5k for Mini Cooper S and BMW 320. Right now I pay £800 a year for the Yaris.

I don't really mind if it's a hatch or saloon as long as it's not a car in the same lines of Yaris and doesn't cost a fortune to insure.

Cheers

You can pick up a Suzuki Swift sport for around that or not much more, can't see insurance on it being too bad ( its a 1.6).

Tidy looking car's too! smile

Much prefer that over a Mini!

Same here, but a BMW 528i for around £700 a year.

Worth looking at bigger cars, never know!

Something big and slightly left-field would be my choice. I was in your position last year and got my SAAB for relative peanuts. Don't worry about the image or perceived drivability of your car, anything will feel better than the Yaris!

Suzuki Swift 1.5?

Sport probably too expensive unless its high mileage and the 1.5 is pretty nippy. Look good IMO.

The Swift sport does look interesting. Regarding going left field, the thing i would love to to do that and trust me I have had a look many different cars in that category but my damn insurance is just crazy. I honestly don't know why I'm getting these ridiculous prices. Last year when I was in better shape financially I bought a CLK 270 CDI but the insurance was 3k so I had to sell it.

Where on earth are you getting quotes? My renewal for my Cayman was 768GBP a few months ago at 23, new policy on my 991 1400GBP. Both Admiral. 2.0 eco box golf 500gbp with churchill. Mustangs 1500GBP combined with KGM via Graham Sykes. I have had my licence for a shorter time than you as well.

Where are you living to be getting 5k quotes on normal cars?

Just checked a Saab 9-3 1.9 TDI and fricking 2.2k. It's most likely to do with the area I live in. If I remember correctly it's group E! My area is not even that bad, apparently it has something to do with fraudent claims being high or something.

Are there any parents or anything you can add as named drivers if you haven't already? young female family members can lower the premium too.

If you haven't already I'd spend a while adjusting some parameters on the quote forms(e.g. parked on street instead of driveway), while remaining truthful and honest, to see if you can bring those quotes down a bit more. Also don't overblow the value of whichever car you are getting a quote on if its not a terribly valuable car, leave the field blank(so they will determine the market value themselves) or you'll get some funny quotes.
