At a guess because the majority of unemployed people are qualified only to do less complex jobs.

What's unemployment like in the Netherlands? That seems to be where the most vacancies are.

Are there lots of people out of work in your industry?

To my untutored eye it doesn't look like there are many entry-level (or trainee-level) roles there, so you need skilled people rather than anyone from the pool of unemployed.

Are some of the jobs in the Aberdeen/Scotland area. Might explain it too. It is a looong way from anywhere, a big move if you have a family.

From an IT jobs viewpoint, I would guess that practically all the IT jobs are being advertised as "must have oil/gas experience" (or something similar). That's going to severely restrict your catchment. Even if any agencies/recruiters see any candidates who could do the job, and be good at it, but are from a different business area, they'll get filtered out by HR, if not the recruiters themselves.

IMO, frankly if employers are saying they can't find people with the right skills, they need to look at their own expectations and processes first.

They're all jobs at Shell, I think.

I'm guessing it's Shell.

Maybe it's got something to do with the regimented process to apply for jobs, and the fact that whoever looks at the data from it isn't willing to contact folk further. I applied, heard nothing, they relisted it, applied again, and heard nothing again.

Whilst on paper I might not be the perfect candidate, clearly the perfect candidate isn't out there if they're re-advertising. Perhaps they should contact candidates and ask them questions.

Maybe what they're looking from is too specific? It can be difficult within a large company. The guy who wants to hire someone is rarely involved with the sorting of the CV's, for example.

(By the way, I love Shell, so this isn't really a rant. Their V-Power is lovely stuff...)

A lot companies seem to only advertise within their own industries. Many jobseekers have crossover skills that HR departments hadn't even thought of.

It would be interesting to see the website and where it is promoted.

The company I work for also sometimes has problems finding people, in an entirely different field and on a far smaller scale, though. We often have interns who may be offered employment when they finish their degrees. My point is, if you can't find people with appropriate skills then they might not exist. Perhaps Shell should consider recruiting less experienced staff and training them where appropriate.

Also, perhaps unlikely, but maybe many people just don't want to work for Shell given current attitudes toward the Oil industry, and media attention on some of Shell's recent controversies in particular.

Hah! Nice one, but no. I'm a Subsea Engineer with nothing to do with recruitment. It ws originally J S Hell with my initials and a st period I was going though when I signed up...

The jobs are all oil and gas, but many companies are considering folks from without the industry now as we/they cannot get people.

Yes, all Shell and just representative of one corner of the Eu part of an industry that is growing at a stupendous rate. Probably why I would try to direct school leavers, grads, convertors to at least have a good look at an industry they may be a little unfamiliar with. Oil industry salaries are high with great prospects for travel/advancement/etc, etc...
