I've been looking for a 997 CS circa 2005 and have seen a fair few examples come up both privately and with dealers such as RSJ but I can't understand why they are so expensive with the dealers!?

Here are some comparisons - can anyone comment why there is such a HUGE price difference. I mean £1k-2k is tolerable but we are talking more like a £4k difference here!??

RSJ: PORSCHE 911 (997) "C2S" 3.8 TIP 2005 55 reg 54k miles £29k
http://www.rsjsportscars.co.uk/used-porsche/porsch...

Other: 2005 55 reg "C2S" 3.8 TIP 2005 55 reg 54k miles £24,995

You can't look at two different cars from two different vendors and try and compare as you know no idea what prep work went into the cars before they were advertised for sale.

One dealer could have spent 5k on bringing the car up to merchantable quality and the other could have spent nothing. Who knows who spent what on each car! They could BOTH be making the same profit margin as we have no idea on how much each car was bought for.

Incidentally, I bought my car from RSJ in Feb. It's an Arctic Silver 2005 Carrera 2S with manual gearbox and 45k miles and i'll be putting it up for sale at a price between those two soon.

No dealer that i know puts £5k on prepping any car. They wouldnt touch it in the first place if it needed £5k worth of work. The Finlay Gorham example is the lowest priced C2S i have saw. I always find RSJ' prices to be reasonable.

P.S. Cridfords and PortiaCraft are the best with regards to pricing and quality of cars IMO.

Until you've seen the vehicles in the flesh, I don't think you can really call RSJ expensive. As others have hinted at: a "proper" 12 month warranty included in the price, fresh paint, recent brake discs / pads, new tyres, or a service included in the price add up and one might have had more TLC than the other.

Equally one is in Norfolk and the other is in the Thames Valley, so I'm sure regional pricing nibbles away at a bit more!

To my knowledge, both dealers have decent reputations!

I was using the figure of 5k as an arbitrary example as that was the price difference. It does not detract from my point though which is we have no idea how much each dealer bought the car for and no idea on how much was spent.

I agree with you though, RSJ prices are reasonable, so much so that I bought my car from them in Feb this year smile

Another £2k would get you a similar car from a Porsche dealer with a full warranty so why would I buy from an independent?

As someone said I can't see £5kish worth of prep going in to a car as they wouldnt buy it in the first place!

Can anyone confirm what the trade price would be on the RSJ example provided? Can't see it being more than £22k add another £5k and that car should be priced around £27k IMHO

Here is a parkers valuation for a car with 70k miles:

Original Price £68,024
Franchised Dealer £25,580
Independent Dealer £25,070
Private Good £23,285
Private Poor £19,705
Part Exchange £20,990
The prices above are based on:

A mileage of 70,000 (average for age)
Options selected: None

Right now adjust for mileage and options and my valuation of £27k seems about right?

Suffolk actually, but I agree about the regional variance. The one in Suffolk would need to be lower price to attract people to come that far to view it (we don't have many 911's in Suffolk, btw - I can easily go a week without seeing another one). And RSJ will have to pay more for premises and staff too.

Plus the level of warranty being offer is different.

Also, do FG replace worn cigarette lighters for free?

Parkers guide is useless for cars like this.

OPC is personal choice - personally, I wouldn't want an OPC warranty - it means I cannot do anything non-Porsche (i.e. mod my car, or even buy an aftermarket battery), and I have to pay for OPC servicing costs.

There can be huge differences in quality between any two cars regardless of whether they have similar mileage and age. If those two cars really are that similar - then of course you would buy the cheaper one. But I doubt it's that simple.

Try reading this :

You'll find it more useful (and I suspect accurate) than Parkers when it comes to placing a value on ANY Porsche.

Ring the usual suspects (probably best not to ring Joel @ RSJ though . . . .) And a couple of OPCs if you want a real laugh this wonderful late summer afternoon.

this ^

trade would be sub £20k if you were selling a 2005 tip C2S with 70k on the clock - phone an OPC and ask them how much they'd give for such a car(it won't be nice LOL)

In addition to the above the advantage of using RSJ is that your cars are spec changeable. I.e. if you don't like the seats or the wheels you can have them swapped out for better ones.

No other dealer offers that! smile

IME WBAC tend to offer bottom book so that's not a bad place to start actually... my guess is £17.5k

Massive overheads difference between RSJ and Finlay-Gorham, which should also account for a chunk of the price gap. RSJ have dedicated facilities in London. FG is home based in the middle of nowhere.
