I know if it sounds and smells like a scam it usually is..but here goes:
I'm selling my Alcon rear discs and had this guy email me saying he wants to buy them. We do a bit of haggling and we agree a price. He then says he will pay me for both the discs and delivery to him.
I ask where he is and he's in London apparently. I am also in London, so i don't see why he can't come and collect them. He sends me a mail today saying the cheque is in the post for the price we agreed and also £1175 for the courier to deliver them to him which is more than the price of a brand new set of discs!!
Must be a scam surely?

Sure you'll be fine.
There are some very generous people out there.
Only yesterday I got an e-mail from Chief Akandi in Nigeria telling me I'd won £15,000,000 in the local lottery. Amazing stuff because I didn't even remember entering. Just sent my cheque off for £300.00 to cover the admin. Should be a multi-millyunaire this time next week Rodney.

Sounds a little dodgy, but guess you can just wait for the cheque to arrive, pay it in and let it clear.
Don't send anything before cheque clears.
Cheque can be recalled up to six months after funds clearing. Don't send anything before cheque clears.

I think it's 3 or 4 to draw on it but 10 for full clearance (i.e. can't be recalled) - finance companies won't confirm full clearance on vehicle settlements paid by cheque for 10 working days for this reason, but after that it's fine (and we're talking much bigger sums that lenders wouldn't take the risk on).
The timescales are known as 2-4-6. It's 6 days to certainty - as long as you weren't party to a fraud.http://www.chequeandcredit.co.uk/cheque_and_credit...

It's been 6 days for about 5 years now.
When fraud is involved it is 6 months. Normally picked up in 2 weeks max but they can have recourse for 6 months! OP is best to ignore the buyer or email saying he will not accept a cheque (bank TT only) and will not refund anything to a shipping company. 100% scam for sureLasitha said:

Could you offer to deliver for a fee and collect cash ??
You would waste your time negotiating with a fraudster? Sure, come over in your porsche and we'll bang you on the head and steal that and whatever you're wearing. Someone will be along soon to suggest a sting operation where you take a few heavy set mates with you. The minute you email to change the terms you won't ever hear from this scammer again and best you do email them to avoid them hassling you over the chq they sent.SCAM SCAM SCAM
IIRC there was an item on the radio a long time ago saying cheques never truly clear and the funds can be taken back at any point. I had a cheque clear (for over £1500) to then have it "un-clear" some weeks later...
I'd be asking for cash or maybe something like Praypal....
