Evening,

I recently lost my badass TVR Cerb 4.5 to a fire & am starting to think of a replacement. I've never had a 911... in fact I've never even sat in one but they're in my wish list & maybe now's the time to try one out.

It would be a weekend type car & my budget would probably be 20-40k. I'm still waiting on insurance though, so I'm not entirely sure. Still, that doesn't stop me teasing myself with the classifieds!

My TVR was a complete hooligan, extremely loud with immense acceleration. Handling wasn't bad but not exactly precision & lets not talk about engineering qualities. Still, it was excellent fun and would've been a keeper had it not self destructed.

I'd be interested in any pointers from other TVR to Porsche owners on sensible models to go for. I'd hate to be disappointed by picking the wrong cars to try. Equally any ideas as to the right direction to look for a weekend car. I've been immediately drawn towards a 996 GT3 but that would be right at the top of my potential budget. It does seem to tick all the boxes I'm looking for though. Also also wik, how do running costs compare? My Cerb was costing 1-2k+ per service & averaging 3k per year when factoring in the occasional exceptional cost.

Cheers for any info. BTW, I'm sure this has been covered before but the search 'is down'

Absolutely no 911 is like a tvr IMHO, which is maybe exactly why you fancy one, but just don't expect a similar car! If that's what you want buy a Z4M, German build quality with hooligan behaviour.

Funnily enough all my mates that had tvr's have now got 911's or had them straight after, seems to be the natural progression. Everyone of them were disappointed by the 911.

I can't really figure it out as I think the 911 is vastly superior but they all miss something about the Trevor's.

Maybe it's something to do with the loud & lairey oversteer hooligan nature of of tvr ownership?

By contrast a 911 is a completely different experience.

I would think you have choices of:

996 GT3
996 Turbo
997 C2/C4

I think it'll be one of the first two. Just personal taste really. Drive both and choose the GT3!

PS sounds like you'll be fine on running costs.

964/993 engined Hot Rod 3.2 has to give some of the TVR type thrills and some of the 911 precision.

996GT3 is probably the answer though.

cerbie is a little agricultural but with half a foot in the modern world so like a 993

96 GT3 should be at the top of the list though as others say but having said that its way more delicate, lighter to the touch, more accomplished than a cerb IMO, very different car

Thanks guys. I guess I'll have to drive some & see what matches my requirements. I'm after something different to what I've had before but still able to provide some of the thrills (speed, noise) & not feel dull & uninvolving.
