I know it doesn't affect many here (sadly, it does me). It looks like there has been another change of heart about having to charge VAT on photobooks (i.e we don't have to pay when we buy or charge when we sell if we are VAT registered):

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/briefs/vat/brief0412.htm

"HMRC accept that a photo book which possesses, as a minimum, several pages, a cover stiffer than its pages and is bound, will qualify for zero-rating as a book."

Does that mean that prices from Blurb etc will suddenly be lower as there's no VAT element?

I bet they're already mulling over the "Good news everyone, no VAT on photobooks" with "but our paper prices have just gone up" hidden away in the small print...

Ilfodak would buy raw materials from suppliers,
pay them VAT and then reclaim that VAT.

Ilfodak would sell their film to Calujessop,
charge them VAT which Calujessop would reclaim.

I would buy the Ilfodak film from Calujessop,
they would charge me VAT and I would reclaim it.

I would send the exposed film to a lab for processing
and the courier and the lab would charge me VAT which
I would reclaim.

I would sell the images to a publisher for use in a book,
I would charge them VAT which they would then reclaim.

The publisher would sell the book to the public
but because books are zero rated for VAT purposes,
no VAT would be charged at the point of sale.

That's an awful lot of book keeping and tax collecting
for a zero sum gain silly

I could be wrong, but I thought Blurb didn't charge VAT anyway.

The wedding album suppliers that I know have stopped charging VAT and some (including Loxley) are even reclaiming previous VAT payments on behalf of their customers going back a few years. Unfortunately for me Queensberry aren't doing the reclaim - it's a bit complicated for them being based in New Zealand.

I think that's right as they are 'offshore'. (If delivery times are anything to go by, they print on Venus)
