Editing GoPro footage

If any of the following is silly, please be gentle with me.

The GoPro records MP4.

Windows Movie Maker apparently can't do MP4s.

I just need to extract some footage, stitch the clips together and add some titles.

So, what's best?

1) Convert to WMV or something and use WMM? (if so any converter recommendations?)

2) Get a (free) video editor which is ok with MP4s? (if so, any recommendations?)

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Yes, WMP can edit go pro video. I know, I've done it.

I have "Windows Movie Maker" Version 6.0 (Build 6002: Service Pack 2) ... if that makes any sense.

ARGH! Sorry, you're absolutely right. I got the wrong abbreviation entirely.

Yes, I meant to say that Windows Live Movie Maker can edit go pro footage.

Could be that yours is old? (I'm on my work computer, and I've only got WMM on my home laptop so can't check the exact version right now.)

You can download software from GoPro that will transcode your footage into an editable format.

If I remember correctly you might have to download the firmware update for your camera to get it as the Cineform links didn't work for me. Can't remember exactly as I was helping to setup someone else's camera.

Once you transcode you can edit in pretty much any of the mainstream programs.
