Bib shorts or padded undershorts?

I have always got away with padded underwear under baggy shorts (MTB use), but do suffer a bit on longer rides.

Do bib shorts offer extra comfort compared to simple padded under shorts? I'll also be wearing baggy shorts over the bib shorts - anyone else do this or would the padded underwear be just as comfortable and probably cheaper?

Bibs all the way: no waist band to cut in, and they don't ride up/down. I also find that bib shorts tend to be of better quality.

Personally I've never had a problem with padded undershorts (baggy shorts on top) for rides exceeding 100km. But I have found that the saddle can make a big difference. So whether you choose bib shorts or just padded undershorts make sure the saddle suits your undercarriage!

Bibs if (unlike me) you can afford the luxury. I rode 35 miles today, after 2 1/2 weeks off the bike, and wore a cheap/nasty pair of Karrimor/Sports Direct shorts. Drawstings at the waist, and too tight at the leg grippers, so pretty uncomfortable, and with a very basic foam pad. The butt is fine, no issues there, but boy do my legs ache. My last ride was 103 miles on 16th August, I was a good deal slower today over 1/3rd the distance, and I'm still suffering now.
