Viewed and drove a private PDK Boxster yesterday, agreed a price and arranged to collect next week when the private plate had been transferred off.

I have HPI'd the car and there is a discrepancy on the national mileage register.

The car is showing 16k miles and is under 3 years old so has had only one service in March this year at 14000.

The register has 4 entries. One in 2010 at 3000. The second in Feb 2011 at 19000, the third at 24000 in Aug 2011 and then one recently at 16000 which I presume was done by a potential buyer.

The 2 middle ones are entered by the manufacturer.

I have contacted the seller and he is 100% certain the mileage is correct as he has owned the car since 3000 miles.

He suggests the private plate may have caused the error.

I am confident the mileage is genuine but concerned the issue may arise when I come to sell the car in the future.

Any thoughts?

I think I would like to see the register corrected if it is wrong.

This will no doubt come back to haunt you at some point.

If it can't be corrected a signed letter from the seller may help, but if it were me buying it from you xxx years down the line, I would just give it a miss due to the uncertainty.

That's my worry but I believe it's not easy getting it corrected?

I would give it a miss too, cars are hard enough to sell privately without added complications

Plus the owner is never gonna say " yeah I had I clocked " just before u buy it!

Maybe bks, but is it worth checking if the two by the manufacturer were registered in Kilometers? The ECU output is in Kilometers not miles.

I have seen this in service books where the documented mileage doesn't add up but turns out it was entered in km.

The cars only had one service so not sure when the 2 other entries would be made and by whom

Could be nothing to do with the owner or any computer/garage, ie:
I like a car i've seen in the classifieds, I see the number plate on the pictures I can then Hpi the car, when it asked for mileage I guess, well it a 2009 car so it must be something between 0 and 30,000 punt in 24k and get my result.
Some body did this to one of my old Boxsters when I was selling it and I never managed to get it corrected.

OR!

Some body swapped the instrument cluster for a spare so could clock up the miles on that then 'pop' the original back in for the service and then the sale, although the ECU on the Porsche will have the correct mileage.

I have changed my private plate between lots of cars and NEVER has mileage of the car (either one) ever been part of the proceedure.
