OK, I thought the JPEG converted from RAW would decrease in file size but I am seeing 120% in some cases. Using Faststone, I know I can set it to reduce but this puzzled me. This normal?

Just doing a bit of a back up onto Flickr, spreading it about a bit and all that.

That's interesting.

What are you starting with? Compressed or uncompressed RAW? 12 or 14 bit?

And what are you ending up with? presumably the least compressed JPEG settings you can?

Just checked, and I normally get 50Mb files down to about 30-35 at 100% quality and without resizing (1.5Mb at screen size results!) - but of course, it's never a simple substitute of one for the other!

Have to do a few this afternoon to get the full info, I deleted them as they were getting to 30 odd gig and only a fraction of what I have (some pruning required).

More curious as to why, asked the program for no compression so set the slider in fastsone to 100%

As for RAW, off the camera as is. So assuming it is uncompressed and bit wise, never looked. Check up on that later. Tis a Canon CR2 file name, that I think will have a deeper meaning to someone and somehow I think that may have an answer?

Replying on the Mac, doing the reduction on the laptop and that is off at the moment so cannot get any more details. But it was along the lines of 8 meg for the RAW and 10 or 11 after conversion to the JPEG.

It's quite possible if you start with a compressed RAW and process to max quality JPG that has lots of detail.

OK - I won't be the person to answer then...

Definitely a Dark Art .... hehe

(With Nikon NEF files there are RAW files and RAW files - a plethora of choice as to whether to compress, to losslessly compress or not compress at all, to save in 12 or 14 bit, which means a variety of RAW file sizes are possible. That's before you add or take away stuff in your JPEG !!)

JPEG is a lossy format. 100% is not sensible, you'd be better using a format made for lossless compression of images.

100% doesn't mean lossless when it comes to the JPEG format, it just means the
least loss possible. It's still compressed at around 2.6:1.

I've not checked Faststone but a Canon CR2 files will, typically, be about half the size of the original on a straight conversion size for size at 100% quality on the jpg. Much less compressed.

Much larger if converted to a TIFF file.

Which camera? Not something fancy with built in HDR is it?

The RAW file can also vary a lot in size depending on the subject matter. Moroever the more recent/ larger sensored bodies appear to output (typically) proportionately larger files than older sensors of the same size. Nonetheless a notably larger jpg than riginal RAW seems strange - inless something is incorrectly reporting the sizes.

350D so the reduced size format. Interestingly PS Elements 3 reduces a 6.7 odd meg to 3 or so. Quick off the cuff check earlier. So it is something I am doing in faststone?

With regards why JPEG, I have the raw backed up across a few HD and DVD but just thought a reasonable size and dump it on flickr, belt n braces back up. Flickr will not take raw. BT infinity means upload times are very good.

Odd.

Are you just doing a "Save As" or is "Resize/Resample" involved?

I have just performed a quick check for oddness with on old CRW RAW and a CR2 from an S90 and nothing odd happens. Full Fat jpgs are about 1/4 of the size of he RAW file.

Opps. Should have mentioned, doing a batch convert.

I see an option to "use JPEG quality from original file if possible". This was un ticked. I thought the JPEG would be a reduction ether way as the output folder was all JPEG. Tick the box and and a few percent smaller, un tick, it is larger.

A "save as" gets me a smaller conversion again.

OK, I was being dim but still thought the conversion with a JPEG extension would have been smaller. Think I am missing something still.

Edit. I was using batch convert as I had quite a few several gigs to change.

I use Faststone for most of my conversion and post processing. Out of the camera my CR2 files are usually between 14 + 20 MB. I always convert to 1046 x 704 JPEG and they appear to be somewhere between 500 + 700 KB.

I am going to have to dial in a smaller size and keep that box checked. I just thought that with it set to 10 on the scale on the batch convert it would be be best quality JPEG but a reduced size when compared to the original.

I notice for example, the TZ6 compact I also carry has a JPEG around 4 mbits and the mrs Canon ixus is around 2 or 3 and the 350D around 3-4 when set to JPEG. All depending on the scene. Just assumed that the batch convert would do the same. If I get time later today I think I will compare two and see if there are any differences apart from size, purely out of my own curiosity.

As an example. This JPEG photograph was converted from RAW and is 1050 x 709, 785KB.

Cracking shot. I appreciate they will still look good. Think I will stick to popping them on another HD and take it up the folks (in the process now anyway) and keep flickr for show and tell and smaller sizes.
