Unusual specification (non-S PSE)
Discussion
I am shopping for an MY09, 997, Gen 2 non-S, with PSE, in a colour other than black/silver/grey/white, preferably yellow.
Did they ever make such a thing? Because i'm buggered if i can find one. PSE seems to be the sticking point - i've only ever seen Gen 2 non-S cars 2010 onwards, which busts my budget. Did some factory limitation exist or are they our there but in very small numbers?

Yellow has always been a rarer colour choice, so that really narrows down your options, but it might be worth sending a few e-mails out to some OPC's / Indies and letting them know what you're after?
They sold four times as many "S" models as the one you want and I suspect that those that bought the standard Carerra (which had more meagre spec to start with) might have spent their money on other options (like bigger wheels or Xenon's etc).
Of course budget always enters into it, but maybe it would be better to buy an "S", or if you really must have a Carerra, then spend the extra few £'s and have a post 2008 Gen II (non "S") with the DFI engine. This will be more powerful, much more reliable and more economical than the earlier GenI.

I'm browsing for a gen 2 cab. The S is more popular but a well specced Carrera is barely slower and cheaper to tax. I know for many the ved doesnt matter but I resent paying more than I have to.
VED is part of the reason i'm not looking at an S.... add to that fuel (mine will be a daily commuter) and the simple fact that having thought it through, i've decided that i really don't need to go any faster than what i have now (Z4M). I do want a reasonable noise though, hence PSE.The problem with Porsche is that as soon as you can afford one, you can almost afford the next best one..... if i fall into that trap i'll never get one

Back in Sept/Oct 2009, OPC Leeds had a nearly new (possibly a distressed sale) Speed Yellow Gen 2 3.6 PDK up for sale at £53k (yep) with all good the boxes ticked.
Unsold, I believe the car was then sold to another dealer, Harbour cars (who put it up for £57k) then to a private buyer.
I have not seen the car pop up in the ads since....

Go for the S. The non S will not be "cheaper". You may buy it for less, but you will also sell it for less. You also get quite a lot of extra spec for the difference. The fuel saving sounds dubious to me - I suspect there's not a lot in it in reality.
Also, if the difference between £435 and £275 per annum is material to you, don't buy a 911! That's less than 2 tanks of fuel. One nail in a tyre and you'll face a bigger bill than that saving.

What he said. You'd be crazy to pursue an S for the reasons stated. You are searching for something far less available and far less desirable to the majority of buyers. You may end up putting a bit less money into it initially, but in the end it'll cost you more. The fuel saving sounds dubious to me - I suspect there's not a lot in it in reality.

I disagree. I bought a non s gen 2 for exactly the same reasons. At resale when the cars lost another 15k, the next buyer will be more interested in low VED than you are. I had the budget for an s but felt next to no difference, and saw no point in chucking an extra 5k at the car for no discern able benefit (to me) but multiple downsides, Ved, fuel economy etc.
Mines my daily, and to be honest a gen2 non s pdk is quicker and a lot more economical than a gen1s. Only major spec differences between gen 2 s and non s is pasm, you get xenons, nav etc, and most will have 19s.
You get it cheaper and when you sell it it'll be worth less, but the difference will shrink, so you'll lose less.
As for sports exhaust, As a daily, I'd never want it. I want a noise off completely button. The non s with standard exhaust sounds just fine when you gun it.
Yes more buyers bought an s new, but just as there's buyers for a non s new, the same applies used. A decent specced non s is plenty of car. I have never been disappointed in the power of mine and thought this needs more power. More than fast enough for the public road.
The replacement for mine will almost definitely be a non s pdk 991, in 18 months. For exactly the same reasons I bought my current 1.

Yes I know, but having driven one at the PEC, and driven an S on an extended road test, the difference is not very noticeable.
I reckon a 2 year old 991 3.4 will be 50k at an OPC at 2 years old, with pdk and a couple of options, hopefully on 19s. The S's will be 60k for a car where you still can't use all the power on the road, on 20" rims with stupid tyre prices, and a load of batty options I neither want or need.
It's a daily.
To me a 911 s either an accomplished daily road car, so basic carrera, or it's a track car (gt3)
Anything in between you get not much more for a lot more money, except possibly the turbo.
