Hi,

I have always admired Porsches. People say they are common however the name has always had an allure of sportiness and elegance. Aston Martin owners say they have no soul and yet they are talking about a car that has not changed in years, whereas Porsche has a design which has been honed over the years. Mercedes always battle them and yet Mercedes can have too much reliance on electronics (which means more can do wrong). The question I have though is which is the best porsche - money for metal. Now I don't want people to just say the most expensive - after all at that price you would hope it was amazing, but for the ordinary run of the mill man(or woman) who isn't fortunate to win the lottery, for everyday driving and one that isn't going to have to mean you need a mortgage to run and one you could happily use all day everyday in whatever weather....which is the best porsche?

New or used? Value for money:new, a base model Boxster manual, used, a decent 944 (probably an S2).

"Best"? Depends what you want it for - a GT2 RS would be great for a Euro-hoon but no use to take the kids to school.

It really does depend on your budget.

Sub 10k I would personally look for a good, late model Boxster S (986)

Circa 15k the same, but the later model (987). Or a well maintained, early facelift 911 (996) if I needed 4 seats.

Circa 20-25k I would most definitely go for the 996 Carrera 4S. In fact that would be my choice overall from a practicality, cost and fun persepctive.

Circa 30k, a good 996 Turbo. As above, but much faster.

Circa 40k, a 997 Carrera 2S/4S for practicality, or Boxster Spyder for fun.

Circa 50k, a 997 turbo. As above, but much faster.

And so on, and so on....

So ask yourself, two questions

1. What is your budget
2. What do you want... boot space, practicality, 2 or 4 seats, fun, speed, handling, image, gas mileage, track days, classic or modern looks, etc.

There are so many different options out there you really need to narrow this down a bit!

Take your pick, from a vanilla 964 to a Cayenne diesel. There are very very few lemons in the last 25 years and the older cars are just as useable and relevant today as they ever were. Saloons, roadsters, GT's, suv's, trackday specials, country lane cars, continent crushers and front engined convertibles.

Only you can decide.

I have been trying to narrow down your question and give you a definitive answer, but it then occurred to me that there are many Porsches that meet your criteria.

There really is a Porsche for everyone.

Depends what you mean by 'best'. Best for reliability, driving fun, depreciation, practicality etc etc ? I would rate my 993 as more fun, having greater character and better reliability than the Boxsters, 996, 911SC and 911 3.2 I have owned. I do really like the look of the 991 but its a lot of cash and despite being the least depreciating car (I am just not convinced at that survey that came out last week - look at 997s) I still think it will have a long way to go for reliability and depreciation (IMHO) against a 993. I also like 968s which I think are probably great value for money at the moment. Never driven Cayman or 997 so can't comment but like Boxster and 996 their engines worry me.

I am not sure there is a 'best' Porsche but I will happily wriggle my toes in the socks in my sandals, stroke my beard sagely and agree with a previous poster - 993! wink

Interesting debate so far.

I was not looking at it necessarily from a prospective purchaser, although advice on that is always a good thing.

I find that currently there are so many car programmes that just go on about power, more power and just give top marks to the most expensive cars. These don't really give the full story about a car, nothing like the real users. With the history of so many people in here driving all sorts of cars it would be interesting to hear people's views. So far it seems the older cars are loved more than the newer ones?

The new generation Porsches are bland, Astons do have soul.

For me the 993. Bought mine in March have done 6k in her already. I've taken her to France, Germany and 10 days in Spain already and other than a hyper active alarm she has not missed a beat, hopefully back to Spain for a long weekend in her in late September.
Love every minute of driving her, each trip out is an adventure that makes more modern kit bland, and older kit a chore.

As a lifelong Porsche owner, the 993 is hard to beat IMO. Saying that though, the more modern stuff is great value for money secondhand.

A 993 has it all.

Looks. Sound. Comfort. Speed. Reliability. Easy to drive. Space in the back. Cheap to buy, cheap to run compared to newer models.
They are very hard to fault as a genuine all-round car.
