Not sure if this should go here or in Motorsport, but, what are the Scottish Hillclimb venues like, length, fun, toilets, showers, camping etc?
Been to Doune, but that's as far north as I have been.

Forrestburn is on this weekend. Good track. Spectating is limited (not that geared up for spectators and don't charge those that show up).

New toilet block just replaced the old "quaint" one. That's about it for facilities.

Great people though.

Any more details? Main event day, Start time, classes running?

I am thinking about taking up Sprints and hill climbs in an old MG midget i have sitting here but would like to get a bit of advise as to what i can and cant do to it for which classes!

A lad i know competes in hillclimbing up here, he's in the process of building a 205GTi to run. Planning to go up and see a few.

He reckons it's really easy to get into and quite cheap to begin with. Tempted to take the Mx5 up and see what it's like.

http://www.scottish-sprinting.co.uk/flatchat/ is a good place to ask any questions about hillclimbing and sprinting.

Yea i have had look on there a few times and read my way through some of the newbie threads and have picked up a few pointers but they always end up advising people to get along to a meet and see what its all about so you can talk face to face to the pros to find out the do's and dont's about your particular car and class to prep it for.

Currently three operational (Scottish Championship) hillclimbs in Scotland.
There's also Bo'ness.

In addition, we're all hoping that High Auldgirth will be ready and approved as an additional championship round in 2013.

For more detailed information, the advice of JohnS above applies.

Also, this book is a "must have".

Cheers,

Eric smile

I'm interested to know why you say "but".

Not being funny - genuinely interested.

Having had a look at the topics and posts on there the questions being asked when it comes to starting out are exactly the same questions i would be asking at this stage and therefore these questions have now been answered for me having read the reply's. the BUT is more of a now i need to get to a recent event and see exactly what is involved as you can only take/understand so much from someone else's typed words on a forum so getting along to see it for myself again is the next step before i start preparing a car to compete.
I used to go the the Rumster hill climb's in Caithness many many years ago as a youngster and was involved in Motorbike racing (600cc) for a few years over 10years ago now (Very expensive hobby!!)
I went along to Bo'ness last year for a look and have spoken with Digger (long time hill climber) a couple of times about what is involved so the bug was starting to catch.
The final bite was when a mate of mine from Argyll mentioned to me a couple of weeks ago that he was thinking about giving up motoX and getting back into some form of car racing (he was with a TVR race team a long time ago as a mechanic) and thought hill climbs was the way to go. I have given him a call and looks like we will both be along for a look this weekend smile

Kicks off about 10am usually, should be done and dusted by maybe 3?

If you're planning on heading up all day, I know they're short of marshalls, even if you've never done it before, it'll be a great help, you get paid a tenner to cover your fuel, free lunch, and best seats in the house in terms of the action.

I might be marshalling on Sunday, depends how the other commitment I have on Saturday goes.
I'd have stuck my mitt up for Marshalling too but unfortunately I'm unwell with no prospect of being fit for the weekend. Marshalls get the best view :-)

Bit of a thread hijack going on here so bringing it back on line.........
Story is that I am currently residing in N Yorks but lived on the Isle of Skye for 5 years and still have a place there. Wife keeps wanting to go back permanent.
I have been out of hillclimbing for about 10 years but have a mini that, whilst being built for club rallies, could turn into a road class hillclimber.
Trouble is from Skye, IF we moved back there, every motorsport venue is MILES away.
Its 4+ slow hours to Doune.
So if I was to take to the hills again I would be camping overnight and hence the requirement for ablutions etc.

I went along in the Capri for a look on Sunday and ended up on the tools helping Digger keep his old single seater going!! great range of cars competing shame rain dampened things towards the end of the day.
I will definitely be getting involved and on the track myself, now i just have to decide if i should apply for my licence now and use the Capri 2.8i at this late stage in the year or wait until next year!

It looked like it was far enough out the way to be a great camping spot, the facility's are not exactly the Rits but toilets were nice and clean (better than some proper camp sites i have seen!)

It wouldn't bother me staying up there for a couple of nights

Getting back on topic, try these guys: (they hold an annual gravel sprint if you wanted to mod your car for that?

http://www.skyerallyclub.co.uk/

and whilst not completely local, these guys

http://www.minisininverness.co.uk/

There is also the Crofterra which is a run up the west coast over a couple of days, organised by Highland Car Club. smile

http://www.caledonianmsc.freeuk.com/Docs/crofterra...

Hope this points you in the right direction for some more local stuff. Your most local hill climb or sprint would be Golspie...not very local! :P
