Looking to take Mrs H away for a night to a nice hotel when I finish my current contract.

Looking to go no further than 2 hours or so away from Edinburgh.

Nice surroundings, good food, nice atmosphere, you get the picture biggrin

Any recommendations?

That is practically anywhere in Scotland.
What sort of location? Town/village/rural. Coast/higlands/Trossachs and so on.

Another vote for Mar Hall, just past Glasgow airport.

Royal Terrace in city centre of Edinburgh is a lovely lovely hotel, but doesn't have all of the best facilities.

I do a lot of gigging around Scotland and would consider Dalhousie Castle a nice venue, Norton House and Ballathie House are also up there.

All have the country aspect and I have eaten in Dalhousie and Norton and can say the food was lovely, Dalhousie especially. Dalhousie and Norton have spa/pool facilities aswell.

Macdonald Marine hotel & spa in North Berwick would be a good choice.

Stayed there once - it's like a different world, not just the hotel but the also the grounds.

Gleneagles is great but a bit big and impersonal IMHO. It's a bit further to travel but the Isle of Eriska just south of Oban is outstanding.

Wherever you choose, hope you have a great time. Let's know where you end up and what it's like. Always good to know of decent options for weekends away.

It can be a bit impersonal but is a great place to stay - worth it for the cigar room and Fairlies - off for dinner there in a few weeks and very much looking forward to it.

You will do well to get to Thurso in 2 hours from Edinburgh

^ I realise that but, 2hrs from Edinburgh opens up a lot of options in a lot of directions.

If its to say "Thanks for putting up with the silly hours recently" then what about Stobo Castle @ Peebles?
She can have some pampering while there. And the drive can be good fun if you don't get stuck behind a tractor.

Alternatively, you can't go wrong with Cameron House Hotel at Loch Lomond.
If you're feeling flash, drive to (near) the Glasgow Science Centre and get the seaplane up to Loch Lomond.

If you're foodies, stay up at the Fairmont St Andrews Bay Hotel and book a meal at the Peat Inn (not far from Cupar).

Or, as noted in other posts, Gleneagles. It might be cliched, but its certainly earned that right.

Have a great time, whatever you choose.
