Quick question i suppose... long time lurker, infrequent poster!

Been where I am for 13-14 years now, steady role, steady job in IT.

40 mile commute to and from office each day which is ok by me. Bit tiresome, but bearable.

New customer signed up, localish to me - wanted to talk to me about working for them, managing the relationship between them and my current employer.

Current employer found out today, from the customer, nothing been said yet - but sure it will be.

Could this be seen as gross misconduct by myself or not?

If you are any good and valued by the firm it may be a good thing - they may offer you a bit more ££ to stay put.

As above, they will be non-plussed with the company trying to poach you.

was only considering it as it's a 10 miles less commute...

will be interesting to see how it goes then..

Check your contract: does it contain any post termination restrictions? If so, what do they say? They may or may not be enforceable, depnding on wording and circumstances. If not, be careful nonetheless not to do anything that could be construed as removal of confidential information or any part of a database. It is best to be open and up front. It is not misconduct to plan to leave.

If no contractual issues, and with a bit of imagination I would see it as an opportunity for your boss to have a really good contact in a client. We recently "lost" someone to a client and it's working out pretty nicely.
