Recommended road tyres

My MTB has the usual chunky tyres on it which make it rather hard work to propel along. Looking at the Halfords website, I see they have a 20% sale on so it looks like a good time to buy a couple of more road biased tyres.

Any recommendations please?

I've cut and pasted this from an old thread, April this year, but the statement is still true. Continental tyres on 3 bikes, STILL no punctures on any of them:

"Can't speak for the GP4000's, but I replaced last summer's Schwalbe Ultremos with Conti GP 4Seasons for the winter, and would definitely recommend these. There are 3 very hard working bikes in the family, Uni student son commutes on a Giant Talon fitted with Conti Contact 'road-style' tyres, and after weekly punctures on cheap rubber, I switched the wife's step-thru commuter onto Conti Tour Ride. So far over autumn/winter there have been no punctures at all on these three bikes, and no sign of any premature tyre wear either. I have to temper this with the fact that I didn't really get on that well with a set of Ultra Gatorskins on my old road bike - some of the threads in the tyre wall were exposed outside of the rubber of the carcass, and some of them became ripped over time. They are still on the bike and function OK, although compared with the GP4Seasons, they are a bit unforgiving to ride on."

I've got continental tyres on mine. Semi-slick things with a smooth surface through the middle and knobblies round the outside. They are great.

I had a puncture after about 100 miles but it was a 1 inch nail that would have went through any tyre I think.

Merlin cycles are always very competitive on pricing so I would have a look there.

I have only had 2 brands of tyres on my road bike. But in March I bought some new wheels and fitted them with Continental gp4000s. They have been on there for around 750 miles wothout a single puncture which I think is very good going. They have even survived a couple of slides due to emergency braking to avoid cars etc.

Like I said I cant compare them to any other major brand but when the time comes I will definitely be buying another pair.

1/2 the price of the other Schwarble road tyres, fast rolling and seem puncture resistant (will regret saying that!)

Here's a silly question. Rim currently has a 1.95" wide tyre on there but is obviously significantly narrower itself. What width tyres can I put on it?

I fitted these to my mountain bike and they coped excellently with a 600 mile ride to Paris:

They will fit just fine on your rims.

I am running 1.75" Personally less than a 1.5" may look a bit skinny
