Police, Thinking of applying. Any advice?

My local area is recruiting for new officers. I am very interested in applying but wondered in anyone in the real world had any advice. I understand that it will be very hard to get in in the first place!

I recently applied to a force, I passed the application and then went for an initial assessment which I made a silly mistake on and failed.

Main bit of advice I've got for the application is try and speak to someone you know who has applied in the past and failed at the application stage, they 'should' have then received a letter that gives you some very good indication on how they want the questions to be answered and then you can base your application around that.
