Hi forum,

Having recently got into cycling, i thought i'd try to use sme clever app to record rides. I've just finished a (to me) epic 30 miler up to the cat and fiddle (it's a big hill, for you southerns) smile
Spent about 3 hours the other night resurrecting wor lass' iphone 3, got strava, set it going and off i pedal. Having got back, strava claims i rode 0 miles in 1 minute 30 seconds...
Tried loads of fannying about since, it seems to stop as soon as you lock the phone - what am i doing wrong?

Cheers

It doesn't stop, you must have done something wrong.

Yeah, I used to use my phone for Strava and it shouldn't stop just because your phone has locked. Maybe you need to chance a setting on the phone? Or maybe you accidentally switched it off somehow - I used to start the timer then come out of it to make sure I didn't mess it up when putting the phone in my pocket.

It might be because its a iphone 3. They cant multi process like a 3S or 4.

My i-phone 3 crashed if i got a message when using endomondo or cyclemeter, but is ok on my old 3S. I havent tried strava on my 3 TBH.

Might be worth trying it without music, just set it off and switch the screen off.

Cheers

Ahh. Much googling has informed me that strava needs 3s or above. Sadface!
Will have to resort to using map my run, but that doesn't record hills...

Try RunKeeper.com. It doesn't have the competitive sections but it does have an altimeter which works fine. It also gives you 5 minute updates on distance, average speed and current speed.

Found the problem - apparently the gps in an iphone 3 needs a network to work - so ince i'm running no sim, it doesn't work.
Looks like it's time to find an app for blackberry, might be a challenge!

Endomondo's available on blackberry. Results can then be exported from their website and in to strava's.

Strava is far from infallible...

Try GPS Logger. It's free and will record elevation too and you don't need a network signal.

After each ride it will automatically e-mail you a GPX file of the ride and will also upload the GPX to Dropbox if you want. You can then upload this GPX file to Strava manually on your PC. It sounds fiddly but only takes a minute or two.

I use GPS Logger rather than Strava on longer rides because it uses a fraction of the battery. It's pretty good but does miss the odd segment now and then.

Really? I had an iPhone 3G for a year and it used to run a SatNav app absolutely fine, even abroad with data turned off.

Does it just need a SIM card in it?

Well, i've tried 3 apps (strava, apmyride, runkeeper), all of which give no daa / gps error as soon as i'm out of wifi range. From googling, aGPS uses antenna locationso assist gs, which might be the cuse of my fun. Stava site says 3gs needed (not 3g), other 2 claim comatibility with the 3, but no joy.
Picking up a new bb on weds, i'll see how i get n with the suggestions above nd report back!

Good news - gps tracker 2 uploaded to strave works a treat.
Bad news - don't open google maps mid ride, or it only records the first 15 miles. The uphill ones, and I can't climb (yet).. sadface.

One question for you all - in "weight", do I put my weight (93kg), or me plus bike (115)? Also, is there a way to see the segments you've ridden without just moving the map about a lot on high zoom?

Thanks muchly
Gump

Thanks Dizee. The good news, is I'm not on the last page of any segment. Despite how lame that achievement sounds, it's a good start!

To be fair on the bike, 93kg is me, 115 is me holding bike with camel bak thing, helmet, etc etc.
It might not be a race bike, but it has green wheels. Thats got to count for something, right?

Green wheels must be worth an extra 2 mph. :-)
