So........................ looking for a road bike

And do like the look of the Dolan Mythos, with all black stealth finishing kit. But the big question is........... Sram or Shimano groupset? . Looking at spending about a grand,which I then have a choice of 2 reasonable groupsets. I am quite 'anti shimano' so am heading to Sram, but is it as good as Shimano etc. Any help on this os good. thats the easy bit,getting it passed the current wife is the hard bit !!!
Well I borrowed a mates road bike last night and was a very retro Cougar in 653 with campag stuff on it. The rear cassette had a racing set up on it with probably one tooth difference between sprockets, making climbing a nightmare. The wheel bearings on his mavic wheels were rattling, bottom bracket creaking and clicking. The thing weighed a ton. But I took out a couple of workmates for a spin and was a laugh.On the flat it was a quick bike, but gear cables were seized, so that was a fiddle to get it working. I should have expected it really, as I have to fix 'all' his bikes.
Suffering a bit this morning. We did about 35 miles and climbing with no gears ( 42 small front chainring too) on some reasonable climbs, feels like my chest has squatted big weights.
So, where does it go with the road bike? Well. with my daughter starting uni next month, money is tighter than tight, but I was shopping yesterday and 'might' be collecting it tonight.( late night opening !!) I quite liked the Giant Defy 2 in our local shop, with a hefty ( not on the web yet) discount, making it a great buy to get me going and if it gets me through to the daughter coming out of uni, perhaps and if I still ride the roadbike, I can go a bit more exotic.Its a more upright riding position. I am not a all out race head, so suits for longer distances without neck ache. Ideal for winter rides when the off road side of riding becomes more of a chore than fun.

I went for the SRAM Rival groupset as this maxed the 1k budget (although a week after they were offering Ultegra for the same price!). First time using SRAM on a road bike and I really like it, smooth shifting, looks great and lighter than Shimano alternative.
The bike itself looks more expensive than it is and rides very smoothly. Upgrades? Probably the wheels next year when I have some more cash. Also the San Marco saddle is rock hard (only reason it's staying on at the moment is because the colour matches
) otherwise my other saddle would be going on.

Went to the shop to get the Giant. Wife said it looked awful, just didnt look right. I did ride it out for a spin and found the bike was very weird to what I used to ride ( albeit 9yrs ago) The bike was just missing a basket the bars were that high. We took the spacers out and spun the stem over. Went for a spin and quite frankly was quite uninspired by it.Also they come with 172.5mm cranks which felt wrong. So the wife pulled out a Trek 1.5, which they didnt have any in my size, sadly. Then they pulled out a Cannondale Synapse 2012, 105, which they didnt have any in my size, but could get one in a day or two. Price has increased now to £800, which has still been passed by the wife !!. Then off to the Specialized shop in Newbury and they will offer me a 2013 Allez with decent spec for £800 (£100 of a new spec bike is good) So been shopping around tonight and seem to have found a lovely looking bike, which is the Cube Peleton Pro, with Easton wheels and finishing kit and Tiagra groupset. Found it at a shop for £689 delivered, so may well get that.Anything else I should look at in that price range?

Cheers Village Idiot, but too small for me and I have got a bike coming !!! The day before I go on holiday aaarrgghhhhh, what a long week I am going to have in Turkey. Managed to track down a Cube Peleton Pro, which are as rare as rocking horse poo, as new model is due out next month. Not much of a discount, but it seemed to tick the boxes. Spent all day going to shops and on the phone finding one and eventually Leisure Lakes had one left in Kent. Roll on next Friday for its first ride............
