I don`t understand why there is vat on bikes..

There green machines ,surely they should drop the vat off !

There is a tax break of sorts via the cycle to work scheme(s).

Stupid thing is that you still have to pay VAT when a company pays for a bike through the C2W scheme.

Well, only to the extent your company doesn't have a full recovery rate. If they fully recover VAT then you're charged on the net value of the bike.

Cycle helmets are zero rated for VAT, not that you ever see that in the pricing, £29.99. £79.99 etc.
