Knee & Shin Pads

Hi all,

Looking for some advice.

I'm thinking about some protection for my knees. I'm off to Whinlatter next week which is prompting this. Now I don't often fall off, and to be honest I don't often ride where I'm greatly at risk of falling off, but next week should be great challenging riding and I want to make the most of it.

I'll not be using the pads when I come back apart from the occasional gnarly route, so whilst I may sound tight I really don't want to spend loads on something I'll use maybe 2 or 3 times a year.

I just need some that will be comfy and stay put on my leg and will not cause a distraction at all by slipping. Been looking on CRC site and it looks like £15.99 upwards - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Mod...

Any reason why not at that price? or has anyone got some great personal recomendations?

IMO knee/shinpads are like saddles: totally a personal preference as to what you find comfortable. I tried several sets before finding ones that suited me - I initially bought 2nd hand and sold on what I didn't like. Then I was lucky on holiday last year that a hire place only charged £6 or so for a half-day hire of pads, so I tried various ones until I settled on IXS Assault knee-shin guards - very comfy for me although lack calf/back of leg protection.

At least with those cheap ones you link to it's not much money lost if they're uncomfortable, but they could easily end up rubbing and causing pain if they're ill-fitting.

I agree with the above poster about pads being a personal choice. A mate had the ones you linked and didn't get on with them at all but his Dad loved them.

Personally I've got http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Mod... and love them. They are really comfortable on long rides and apart from making your legs a bit hot sometimes, I can hardly notice them. I went for them because I've got quite skinny calves and wanted something that wouldn't slip down and these can be secured really well.

Would recommend them all day long, but would also advise you try a few sets if you can.

I've ordered the BrandX ones then, as they get so many reviews, mostly very positive.

Let's hope I don't actually need to test them properly
