I've had a 996 turbo X50 for 8 years & it's for keeps. Thinking about getting a 993 turbo, but have not driven one yet.
Appreciate it's more of a raw drive .. air cooled & probably more demanding. Feedback appreciated & idea of how 'turbo lag' varies between the two models.
Cheers.

Own both.
Simple really one is supposed to be better made.
This is questionable, interior more solid probably, but 993's rust around screen and on leading edge of rear arches and around rear screen, door straps go and are over priced, more laggy. They are old cars.
996's don't rust.

Performance wise, the water cooled car is far quicker.
It handles better is more economical stops better, and if you are not a Porsche expert attracts far more attention

993 sounds better and looks nicer (from the rear IMO-But looks are subjective)
Don't buy into all this last of the air-cooled pap, the earlier air-cooled 930/964 T's are better made trust me.

So you are why the hell have i got a 993tt?
Simple owned it yrs and would never sell it as deep down its nice thing.
The 996 turbo though is far superior drive. EPIC.

The GT2 is the car to own in 996 form though. A future classic.

The older air-cooled cars do rust and the 993 has some vulnerable areas more so than any of the later stuff.
All the GT cars are like RS cars no under seal same with the 3.2CS, its a weight saving strategy, so this GT3 has obviously a one off. My GT2 has been professionally wax oiled and is factory fresh from the roof down

As i have owned a lot of 911's i can assure you 993's are not good for rust, in fact all the old stuff is pretty crap really when it comes to rust. Technology and rust prevention has become the norm and moved on.
In the old day a Galvanized body meant no rust, how wrong could they be!!

When did you last see a 997/996 corroding around windows/door brackets on leading edges of arches, i've view loads and seen not seen one.

In *standard* form, is the water cooled car really "far" quicker? That wasn't my experience. The 996 has got less than 5% more power and torque and there's not much difference in weight. I thought the 996 was quicker but it wasn't a lot for me. I agree it's a different matter with the X50s which is indeed a nice boost in poke and very noticeable. The X50 993 is a much rarer beast.

To the OP, if you're coming from a X50, it'd be at least worth seeing if you can find a 993 with the 430 kit, there are quite a few in the classifieds. A 450 kit is the one to have for power though (different turbos rather than just oil cooler and altered map). If you try a standard 408 car, it will feel noticeably slower than your X50.

yes

To the OP - the 993 vs 996 argument is equal parts measureable stuff and subjectivity. You need to go and drive one.
I think if you've never driven one (or been in one?) a big factor is you may be surprised at how old a 993 looks inside. It certainly shocked me years ago, though didn't stop me now being on my second!

They are quicker but not "Far Quicker" as stated, i think the fact that the technology had made a big step from the 993 to 996 in terms of handling and stopping power etc, so in a professionals hands you would see quite a big difference around a track maybe, but in the real world the AC car is not much slower, but feels like an old car in comparison.
As the previous poster you need to drive one and form your own opinion, 2 different era's in terms of cars.

Surely you're buying into the soul and beauty of the 993TT over the efficiency and power of the 996TT ..

Thanks for the feedback. I think I understand the 'fabric' behind the 993 turbo in comparison to the 996t. I'll get behind the wheel at some point.
