Boris Cycling Event 2013

So Boris announces a cycling weekend in 2013 and hopefully every year thereafter, similar to the London Marathon. He sys 200,000 people will be involved The London Marathon can't cope with 35k people so how will he cope with more than that and bikes?
Surely it will be another sportive that he creates? nothing more? Still, might be good to take part!

They're planning to have a proper UCI race and some crits too. If they can pull it all together, it looks like it could be great. Think the sportive side will be on closed roads too.

£48 for a sportive?!... thats fking ridiculous! Ok, so its London, its closed roads and it will inevitably sell out by virture of the Solicitors wanting to show off their 2013 Wiggo edition Dogmas but thats unbelievable....

Last night I was discussing doing the Etape with a work colleague last night, and deciding it would be rubbish because you'd just be in the thick of it. Kind of like starting the London to Brighton at 9am.

So I just signed up to this ride.

Seems not only women can be a bit mental. My justification is the closed roads through London. I can't see me doing it every year, but I think it's something worth doing once.

Not sure you comprehend how much it costs to close the roads. It's not just a case of putting a couple of cones out m8

Interesting that you need to provide evidence of your time in a previous sportive (from their selection list) in order to enter.

You don't need to have completed one of the events, but if you have done, and in a fast time, you may be more likely to get a place. They are obviously keen to get some guaranteed faster entries from experienced riders.

But you have to provide evidence i.e. upload your certificate or provide a url. You can't just say "Yeah I did both Etapes at 25mph"

I'm doing the Vattenfall Cyclassics next weekend so can't prove anything yet but I'm happy it's on the list if it gives me a better chance of entry.

I've done a couple of 50+ mile rides, planning a 74 next weekend (New Forest Rattler). Put myself down for 6 hours, that's 16.67mph average and allows for a few hills. Although on empty roads I should be faster: I average 16mph on my commute and that's in rush hour traffic.

My commute averages a little less, and I've done the 47 mile Rattler course in 3h15 and 3h10 - you should come in well under 6 hours.

Ha i got a bit enthusiastic and i need to contact the organisers in the morning to change my submission.

Didn't notice that it meant events in 2012 so i couldn't provide evidence of my Caledonia Etape time (2011) as other than my own 525 mile charity event i haven't ridden anything this year.

However putting down that i've raised c.60k for RNRMC over the past 2 years (well the two events have) should get me in with a good shout.

at a guess, Boris wont be paying the same rates that you or I are charged to close a road but even so, 20,000 people paying £50 is unlikely to cover the road closure and manning costs of those blockages alone.

I suspect they are gathering info on peoples expected finishing times to keep road closures to a minimum and almost run the event with rolling road blocks ala Tour of Britain?, surely the whole route wont be closed for the entire duration of the ride?!...

To be honest, I just wish that Bristol City Council could stop arguing for twenty minutes and organise something similar.... Not being a Londoner means I have no real desire to ride the streets traffic free though I can see how that appeals to locals.

I went to the press conference on Friday for the Ride London event, Boris was absolutely hilarious. As its being organised / run by the same people who do the marathon it should be good! I’ve signed up; I probably would struggle with 100 miles at the moment but gives me something to aim for.

Apparently you will find out if you have a place in February, which then gives another 6 months to get in proper shape before the start. I will probably bring my bike up on the Saturday to do the ride around London even if I don’t get a spot among the 20,000.

Likewise, I'll do the smaller ride even if I don't get a place on the long one. You can do multiple laps.
