It's probably been done before, but I can't find it.

It's time to get the folks frogeye back on the road following its restoration. It's been parked up since 89, has an old log book, and never been sorn.

It's been MOT'd, but what's next? An application for a new log book? How do you get a tax disc?

When you say old log book, if it was on the road in 89, presumably you mean the early version of a V5 not the old (buff) log book?

Take the MOT, V5, insurance to a post office and ask for a tax disc. Job done, the latest version of the log book will be triggered by this.

Mine had been off the road since 1968, the previous owner had got a V5 when they became required (1984?) so I just did as above. The PO have the necessary forms.

It's that simple? I expected loads of bureaucracy.

I agree, it shouldn't be that simple, but it is.

If you have MOT and Insurance there's no distinction between a daily driver that needs the tax renewed and something like mine that was off the road for 40 years.

It's more difficult if you don't have a V5, then you have to find a way of reclaiming the reg but the V5 proves the existence of the car,reg and ownership and that's it.

When I did mine the PO lady asked if I wanted 6 or 12 months free tax disc. Errr, I think I'll have 12 as it's the same price wink

Every time I tax the car I get a printed receipt for £0.00. So last time I took a cheque in with me for the same amount on the basis that you can't have a receipt if you haven't paid. She couldn't see the funny side of it though....

What does it say under taxation class on the V5 ?

If it has been off the road since 89 then I would guess it still says PLG.

If so, I would suggest that you go along to your nearest local DVLA office with the V5, MOT and Insurance to tax the car as they will be able to issue a Free tax disc and will take the V5 off you to send it away for the taxation class to be changed to Historic Vehicle.

Unless things have changed at the Post Office now....they are unable to do this for you and would charge you the full going rate for a PLG tax disc. You would then have to go through DVLA to try and reclaim the payment !! Much simpler to get it all done direct in the first place.

jon66 - Unless things have changed recently, the PO issue a free disc just like a paid for one even when it's an old V5. I think they kept the V5 because it said 'Not Licensed' or similar but I came away with the free disc.

Because this car was off the road before SORN existed. Now he's putting back in the system he'll have to SORN.
