Since buying my car around a month ago there has been a rattle noise and I cannot work out where it is from. Frankly its driving me insane! It sounds as though the spare wheel cover could be the culprit but ive padded that out and it remains! I cannot work out if its under the car or inside, is there a common rattly part i need to look for? Sorry for the vagueness!

Handbrake shoe return springs, rear shock absorber bushes and lower steering column crush tube are three common sources of XJ rattles.

You need to get the car up on a ramp and have somebody who is familar with the XJ to take the car for a drive.

I'll wager what little reputation I have here(!) that it's most likely to be rear shock absorber bushes.

The tiniest amount of play (about 1mm) results in a hollow jangling rattle noise that sounds like the spare wheel is loose...

Not too costly to fix either - as said above, get it to someone who has experience of XJs and get their opinion.
