The steepest part is the hairpin.

You just need to ride more, your system is weak at the minute (compared to what it could be in 6 months) and you probably went too hard.

It's a hard hill, but it's not as hard as Barhatch Lane, Or Whitedown. I need to give it another go. Probably get into the top ten these days. And you may have gone up there faster than 200 others, but getting off your bike negates any of that IMO wink

Not weak no, just a lot less strong than what you will be in a few months. And at the minute your legs won't be used to pushing a cadence of 50 up a 15+% hill. Because the difference between a good rider and a new rider is that they can grind it out without having to get off. (I've not had to get off on any hill since I've bought my bike, but trust me I've wanted to, mainly on the two I mentioned).

The trick is to pace yourself better, now you know the biggest kick is at the top, spin away and expect it. No point knackering yourself. Don't worry about strava for the hills yet. Just keep riding.

Sorry to jump in on your exchange, but I have a question regarding Staples Lane and the mythical White Down. Where are they?

Back in March I did an 'off-the-cuff' 63+ miler from Farnborough to Box Hill and back, just to see what all the fuss was about, re: the Olympic Road Race. Great afternoon out on the bike, but not worth the trip just for the Box Hill climb, so I'd like to push the climbing a little more.
My route was out via the A25, Newlands Corner, Abinger Hammer, and back via A246, Great Bookham, East Clandon. Am I right in thinking that both Staples and White Down are North/South routes that join the A25 to the A246, or am I way off the mark. One further question - as most of my riding up to now has been done in North Essex/Cambridgeshire/Suffolk, should I aim to do a little more specific training before tackling the bigger hills? An average recent week's cycling would see me achieve between 75 to 125 miles over 4 days, weather and work dependant, at an average of about 16mph/25+kmh for a typical ride of 20-40 miles, peaking at a PB of 17.7mph/28+kmh on a (relatively) hilly 10 miler.
Any advice regarding route planning in this area would be gratefully received.

Bob On! Cheers, Ta!

Bookmarked, with thanks. At first I thought it was a mickey-take, in a "here's google maps" stylie, then all the pins appeared, and my eyes near popped out, until I zoomed in and saw just how much it would genuinely help me to find all the 'best bits' of the area. Thanks again.

Happy hunting.

For tough hills in Surrey, try Whitedown, Ranmore Road, Winterfold (barhatch lane), they're good.

I seem to remember a fairly stiff test of a hill with a "quayside/riverbank" warning triangle sign on it, in the Kingsley/Binstead area south of Bentley/Farnham. Are you aware of this hill, and is it as much of a test as I seem to remember? I found it quite by accident playing the left/right game a couple of years ago, and am not sure exactly how to find it again, but I'm sure it will be fun to search for it again on a nice sunny day.
