TVRCC Challenge at Brands

Hot action at Brands Hatch

Manugistics TVRCC Challenge Cup competitors enjoyed a hot day at Brands last weekend as the race series visited the Kent circuit.

The sky was blue and there wasn't a cloud in the sky all day, which was perfect for the hordes of visitors to this historic circuit.

The TVR race was particularly well supported, with many cars parked with the race cars in the paddock, and another fine display on the grass bank above the cooper straight.

The racing was also very close, with a historic victory for a Tasmin over a Griffith.

Having qualified on Pole, the beautifully prepared Griffith of V8 Sports & Classics driven by Simon Bowes headed the field round on the warming up lap.

However, as the red lights went out, it was the Moore Racing Turbo Tasmin driven by Simon Mason who got to Paddock Hill corner first. Mason, is a professional racer with a strong pedigree, and his participation is an indication of the growing strength of the series.

For 16 laps Mason held off the Griffith, but the two cars were never seperated by more than half a second. Just behind these two, the Championship leader Steve Lewis consolidated his overall lead with a solid, if lonely, third place, with Steve Hall another 20 seconds behind him.
Meanwhile further back, Graham Walden was in a mighty tussle with series rookie Cliff Jobson in class A. Graham is second overall in the championship, and was desperate not to let a sick motor hamper his series ambitions, but still had the presence of mind to let the leaders through whilst trying to repass Cliff.

In the end Cliff prevailed, but a last lap DNF from John Sumner allowed Graham to hang on to his overall second place.

The final result was a well deserved win for Mason and Moore Racing, and an equally fine drive by Tim Broughton from the back of the grid to secure Class A honours.

Next stop is a double header at Rockingham on August 29th. Lets hope the weather will be as good, since the facility in Northamptonshire is truly first class, and a great place to watch motor racing.
