Right guys,

I've finally got enough money together to get myself a car. I'm looking to get something with a 1.2 engine as insurance is a killer. I passed my test in January and have done Pass Plus too. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of reasonably priced insurance companies (around £2,000)?

Much appreciated,
Craig

Don't focus on engine size for insurance purposes - they don't really work it Like that.

It's all about statistics, and because there are a huge number of 17 year olds who buy stuff like Corsas and Clios because of the small engines then proceed smash them up, the insurance companies can justify charging obscene money for them.

I was 19 when I bought my mx5, and because they're not as popular as small hatches within my age group, the insurance was actually less (for me) than a 1200cc rover 25.

What I'm saying is think outside the box. Get some quotes on something unusual and I guarantee you'll be surprised - my mate who just turned 20 has managed to insure a 3.0 Alfa GTV for less than a grand and he's only had his licence 6 months!

Craig is there any other cars / insurance in the household?

Granted girls are seen as lower risk than guys but we have 2 cars on Admiral multicar and was able to add 17 year old daughter onto a diesel Beetle for about £700pa.

As mentioned above, ins cos have strange ways of working out premiums, in this case the more names that are insured to drive a car means that, theoretically, my daughter will be driving it less than if there were only 2 names (if that makes sense).

Compare the meerkat worked for my daughter but very car sensitive so worth trying a few cars to see what quotes you get rather than going for car and getting stung for insurance

She ender up with a 85BHP 1.4 206 Sport cheaper to insure than 1.2 Corsa Weird but see above

Son is soon getting car and it is making my eyes water what he is getting quoted

Good luck

Not sure how accurate this is
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/advice/car-insurance...

but it lets you select cars per insurance group and as you go through it you can see, for example, that a 1.2 named car might be different groups dependng on the spec of that model and also the year.

best getting some quotes for differant cars and go from there

im currently paying £700 for full comp insurance on my mx5 1.8, im 19, been driving for just over two years, 2 years NCB

its the same price to insure me on a saxo 1.4

look at some cars that you could afford to run, vary with engine sizes, get quotes and go from there

insurance is a pain in the c**t but all the best with it hehe

Back on topic, friends got their about to be 17 year old to buy a Yaris as it was much cheaper than Polos, Lupos that they would've prefered since they are stumping up for insuring the car.

My 2pence, I'm an 19yr old whose been struggling with insurance for a while, I'v finally got decent quotes, try TPFT and fully comp on all your quotes. Cheapest cars for me are 1.4 306's and a 1.4 Focus, I'v tried everything from 1.0 corsa's to Volvo V70's and Vectra's.

Try getting quotes with your mum or some other middle aged female relative, preferably with a good driving record, as a named driver (or failing that, any female). Some companies will give you a substantial discount & she doesn't have to actually drive the car.

I'm 31 with 14 years driving experience & STILL get money off for having my mum on the policy. loser
She's sat in the driving seat once in the 4 1/2 years I've had my car & never once turned the key!

Air cooled and classic insurance
Classic insurance can start at a very low price in comparison - might be worth a shot?

All the classic car insurers I spoke to told me the minimum age they'd cover was 21 unfortunately!
