I'm in the process of setting up a website for my surgery. Nothing fancy, just a web presence, really. I've been in contact with Carelink, who supply server space etc. to the NHS net, and their normal contract, which I would use, is £550 per year, with a data transfer limit of 250Mb per month. Is this reasonable, or will the website be constantly stopping because the data transfer limit has been exceeded? Does anyone know of a better package I can use? C'mon guys, you lot all seem to know about the web and computers; I need advice!

250mb/month does sound a lot but it depends on what you are to use your web site for. If its to send x-rays, communicate with hospitals etc then its probably not going to be enough, however, if its just an information based site giving location, direction etc then 250mb/month should be completely adequate.

God, nubbin. That sounds expensive! I pay £140 per year for my Demon Internet e-mail account and web-site (Standard Dial-up Account). I get 20MB of disk space and the data transfer is unlimited - surely enough for your needs, especially if your site will be "static" (i.e. there is no need for clever programs running on the server).

I get a .demon.co.uk URL. But you can pay a bit more and get a .co.uk or even a .com if you really want.

That price doesn't sound right. If you shop around you'll do significantly better. The price, of course, goes shooting up astronomically once you have server-side processing etc.

If you need any detailed advice e-mail me through my profile...

Nubbin,

Try Primary Care Group Systems Ltd, they have a practice website service, excellent value, hosted on NHS net, see them at www.fizz-uk.net, they have links with the NAPC, and also can provide you with free heathcare information from their Fizz channels service.
Call them on 01372 742515, & speak to Louise Richards.

Don, unless you've got a different Demon set-up to me then you need to read the 'Acceptable Use Policy' which tells you of the limits your website has placed on it.

Rule 22: Demon Internet will require sites that they consider to show excessive use to be modified or be moved to a different server. Excessive use shall be as currently defined at www.demon.net/helpdesk/products/homepages/bwusage.shtml#levels

You do get about 60mb a day but I guess for some people that will not be enough and they will have to move to a business option.

I use www.smartchoicenet.co.uk to host my website, domain name and email. Plenty of storage and bandwidth available, along with some pretty advanced facilities as standard.. only thing you wont get for the 75quid a year I pay is an SLA.

We use edNet at work, the basic webhosting package is probably more the sufficient for you. Check with them about the SLA, I know we've got one for the co-location facility.

I bought www.spnracing.com from easily.co.uk - I think it cost £50. The pages on there are hosted by ukonline, who provide free web space to anyone who registers to use them as an ISP - up to 2MB for commercial sites, unlimited for non-commercial sites.

The only downside is you have to keep your account active by looging in via the ukonline telephone number occasionally.

Nubbin,

We do self-editable websites starting from £35 a year. No programming required, uploading/downloading or that sort, doddle to use. Log in and edit from any Internet PC with a new-ish browser, no software required, full 30 day no obligation free trial etc etc etc.

Without selling it any more, take a look at www.theinternetkit.com or contact me at rupert@ik.com for more info and I'll fill you in on the details and set you up a site if you like.

Just for info I pay £199 per year for hosting my own .com website. Its hosted on an Win2K server and has asp capability. Also you get 25 pop3 email addresses (i.e. each account has its own mailbox and is not aliased. As someone else has already said, if it doesn't need to do anything fancy, then don't pay over the odds for the hosting. Does the £550 include website development (maybe they do it to the NHS standard design???), you said annual cost so I doubt it but you should check. My provider is G Connect www.gconnect.co.uk.

You can speak to a guy there called Ron, the service is very good and you always get to speak to someone when you need them and they'll do what they say, which IMO is very important as I got f**ked about alot by my old host, who I paid over £495 per annum to!!
