My other thread seems to have vanished so here is a quick summary of my £370 porsche. Yup, £370 biggrin

Bought a month ago or so as a fix-me-up'er (I do a bit of car detailing work) but I never realised how bad it would be.

As advertised...

When bought, next to the Skoda....

First job was try and machine the rear wing. Came up OK initially, but more to do.

The front wing however did not, so figured a different tactic would be needed.

The bonnet looked to be a write-off, so I had resigned myself to a spray job on it.

However, on the nearside front wing, I decided to experiment with some wet sanding, and I began cutting through to some reasonable quality red paint

I also had a quick test on the rear quarter, and it came up OK, but once dried, showed it needed more still.

Peanut butter trick on the faded rear spoiler. Yummy!

I decided to see what some aggressive wet sanding would do on the bonnet, and sure enough, some fresh red paint began peeking out from underneath what seemed to be two bad paint jobs on top of each other.

more red paint

and some more

until eventually after several hours, I had a sanded bonnet

All looking like a good improvement, but once dry, the extent of damage done by the wet sanding was apparent.

Recently, began machine polishing, and although a good improvement, more work needed to remove severe marks.

Whilst this has been ongoing I've been trying to fix the inside too. 944 leather interior fitted. Removed the seat rails for a good greasing up whilst there.

I have a box of spare parts to get the passenger window working again, and for a full service. Whilst this has been ongoing the car has been MOT'd, taxed and insured so I can run around in it for a while! biggrin

You are a brave man. Sanding that paint would make me cry....
Looks like you are getting there. Will you have to re-laquer after sanding / machine polishing?

924 wouldn't have been lacquered in the first place. Clear over solid colours is a relatively recent trend.

This man is correct. One bonus is I can sand and polish, and not have to worry about clear coat.

Did a bit more today.

Remember my crappy wing? (2 shots below as a reminder, before, and then after trying machine polishing)

Well, today I decided to hit with the wet sanding paper. Didn't go any more aggressive than 600 grit, with refining done using 1200, then 1500 grit. This helped to minimise the scratching left in the paint which is tough to polish out. It came up as well as I could have hoped in the short term, but it shall need another going over, perhaps just with 2000 grit then another polish.

Car overall is beginning to look a bit more presentable, although not happy with the front offside damage...

Brillant!

I remember a freind of mine had one of these, came to buying the door locks he paid about £300 ,this was 1995, he later discovered that they were the same as the VW LT van door locks at around £60 gulp!

Instead of the peanut you could try "Ground Nut Oil" as its a bit less messy to use with same results!

This used to drive me nuts(oops) as it was my daughters ringtone

Getting that bonnet that colour again has to be black (or in this case red hehe) magic. It was white in places!

Agreed, but oddly the white bits were the easiest to cut back. It was the horrible dark red/brown layers which were a pain in the ass. I'm going to be doing some more on the driver's door and rear quarter tomorrow (weather permitting) so should be more pics.

Whilst shower dodging today I did manage to wet sand the rear quarter but got nowhere near the refining process, so no photos. Obviously, right now, it actually looks worse than it did to start with, but once flatted back a little more (gently) and polished, it will be an improvement.

Drivers door will be next. "Should" be easier as long straight panels to can use the rubber pad a bit more.

First full shot tonight. Not done any work today. My skoda popped a turbo hose so had to do a little work on her instead.

Drivers wingmirror removed, sanded down, and currently primer hardening.

Currently have a spare silver one plonked in its place, to keep me on the road (safely) Door and rear quarter different colour looking as have wet sanded them both, but no cutting back with polish yet.

Sprayed the middles of my intended new wheels tonight too - Before and after one coat of black gloss. One more coat, then lacquer to seal in.

Nice work!

My old 944 was matt pink when I got it, but some elbow grease, liquid Claybar and then regular Zymol would keep it reddish

Every Spring I would have to spend a day on it:

Of course I vowed never to have another Guards red Porsche...so what did I replace her with?

I am keeping this one regularly polished to keep it red, it had a full glass-out respray 4 years ago

Ah - "Mr Kit Car builder" Rob, I presume,

That mirror is very handy whilst the other one is being re-painted. smile

Car is starting to look a lot less like a crapper now! Compared to the first photo anyway! (for reference)

Bloody good work furby!!

Looks like a lot of elbow grease but to manage to dodge the need for a respray is remarkable. Look forward to seeing the end result. thumbup
