Lager or Ale

It seems I've come of age (accord to my father in law), for the wonders of Real Ale are now mine to enjoy!!

Always been a lager drinker tbh, but since entering my 30's proper I've come to appreciate 'proper' drink.

Still like a lager but ale is the drink of choice and I can't see it changing, what is it about turning 30 that makes you drink ale?

I wanted to do a simple poll but can't figure it out so, lager or ale PHers?

I live in the South West so just assumed we ALL drink cider when the sun comes out!

I drink both as well.

I tend to prefer my ale bottled rather than draught, though. Yes, I know, I'm weird. I also prefer it chilled rather than just cellar temp - probably due to my lager background.

CAMRA are going to stone me now.

Anyway, my personal favourites are Spitfire, Badger (Champion and Golden Glory particularly), Bishops Finger, Arran Blonde and Arran Ale.

I haven't had any of them for 7 months now

For some reason it bothers me when people call it lager. It is beer! The brown stuff is ale.

Anyway, I drink both. I enjoy "lager", Budweiser, Miller, and Corona being the favourites.

I really like ale as well, Innis and Gunn is my favourite (the normal stuff, and all the variations). When I go to a pub I try to make a pint of trying something new - the Orkney brewery stuff is fantastic, as is most of the stuff from the Cairngorms.

I have discovered Brew Dog fairly recently too - they have a bar in Aberdeen (going there tonight actually) and some of their stuff is fantastic. Wide variety to suit all tastes - the weakest ones are very nice as are the very strong ones.

Not cheap, but not exactly exterminate either.

No, it's ALL beer.

But then it's broken down into Lager, Ale, Bitter etc.

I've never been a fan of lady beer, except Cobra or Kingfisher in the curry house.

Proper mans brown beer every time, unless I'm in a cider mood.
Butcombe bitter the former, Ashton Press the latter.

I saw the light quite early - late teens - but have noticed a few of my friends starting to drink it now (mid-20s). I've even started brewing the stuff now, with mixed results!

Same here, I'm 19, and enjoy an ale. My favourites are Lia Fail, Bitter & Twisted and Hobgoblin. Nothing can match a cold pint of lager on a hot day though!

I have always been a bitter drinker. Lager is for certain situations only. They are:

• with a curry
• on holiday
• in very hot weather
• when there is nothing else

To be fair, I will sometimes grab some of the more interesting and obscure lagers from the supermarket, I'm really talking about cooking lager sold in most pubs and bars and in slabs from the shop.

Sums up most of my thoughts, though I'll add:

• When I'm in a bar that can't look after its ale/ only serves the 'creamflow' crap - be it Guiness/ Tetley's whatever...

'Cooking' lager is traditionally a poor emulation of the staple beer that our European brethren have always enjoyed - I also like the imported stuff we can get these days (both on draught and in the supermarket) but nothing beats the taste of a nice ale for me in the UK on anything but a hot summer's day

I meant they are expensive, not extortionate.

Also I try to make a point of trying a point of something new every time I go to a pub.

Had 2 bottles of Blandford Flyer (Badger brewery, gingery hints) stored away, gave in and let the other half have the other one with me tonight (he drank the rest of the case, i had to ensure i got some) I'm not sure mine touched the sides....

I do like a German Pils or Weissbier, and Spanish lager on tap on holiday, but preference is still a good British ale

Ooh look, a Banks's Bitter has just turned up for me

Erm, Caledonian, Cairngorm or Harviestoun brewery.


The first two brew an IPA & in the right pub (nothing that isn't served via hand pump), you'll not look back.

The blonde from Haviestoun is also very good.

That's the only Badger I don't like. And I mean really don't like rather than just not having any appeal.

The trouble with lager, in a pub, is that the selection is usually ste. Take my local for instance.

2 good ciders - Thatchers and Stowford Press
3 good ales - Doom Bar, Tribute and Butcombe at the moment

Stella and Becks Vier.



Now, granted, it's a tied pub so the Landlord can't pick anything he pleases. But if there was Peroni, Staropramen, Budvar, Estrella... I could easily be tempted on a warm summer evening.
