Rear Wheel Clicking when not Pedalling

Received my new bike (CUBE Reaction GTC Race 2012) yesterday and took it for a spin, I have a problem with it, I'll try and describe it as best I can...

When the bike is coasting the rear wheel makes a ratchet/clicking type noise until you start pedalling again. My previous bike (Giant XTC4) didn't make any noise but I do know that some bikes do. However after taking the bike to my friends house last night (who has recently purchased another Cube) we noticed that his is considerably quieter.

Is there anything that can be done to stop the noise all together?

It's (more than likely) meant to do that.

Some are mega, crazy loud, others are silent.

Nothing can be done to stop it, its really annoying!

It's easy to stop: just keep pedalling.

Some freewheels are louder than others. Chris King hubs sound like a swarm of angry bees!

Shimano freehubs are pretty quiet, replace the wheels if you're really bothered

How's the S4?

You'll be surprised how quickly you get used to it but, to that specific hub, the only thing you can do is keep pedalling, or change it for a different hub. It's merely a 'characteristic' of different hubs.

S4's good as always thanks - in fact, it's for sale now! Not put an advert up yet but will do so in due course; I no longer have need for a mile munching grrring load carrying brilliant car - a shame because it's so good, but I'm just about to move house and so the money will be better in other places (some of it may go on a carbon bike too )

I've got Hope Pro Evo 2's on my Orange 5 and they make more noise on that than any of the other people I ride with who have the same hubs, I can only assume it's down to frame design and the resonance it creates.

Lets the person in front know that they need to pedal harder.

You may be able to take it apart and apply a dab more grease in the pawl recievers but too much will stop the hub working correctly. TBH youll get used to it Hope hubs are the same, very loud. Usually find the more expensive hubs are louder so look at it as anyone you pass will think your minted LOL

I felt really bad the other day when I passed someone like this - it was on a slight down slope and he was on an old MTB but even so.

Aren't Hope hubs supposed to be really clacky and noisy?

My old Shimano MTB hub is completely silent, to the point I fear that if I pedal too hard it will just slip as the pawls can't possibly be engaging!

My road bike has RS80 wheels (not sure of the hub spec, but Shimano)and sounds like the spokey dokeys mentioned above.
