Hello all.
I got my July copy of Evo in the post today. I found the tyre test very interesting.
I have Bridgestone SO3's on my E30 M3. They were pretty inconsistent performers in the test. They came in last place on the road route and wet lateral grip, but first in dry braking and dry lateral grip and took second in wet braking and dry slalom. The testers cursed them for having non-progressive breakaway charactaristics too. Too easy to spin the car.
I think I will try Contisports next, or maybe Goodyear Eagles. The Pirelli P7000's were rated very highly subjectively by the testers which might be the key for a road tyre....predictable slides and all that.
I wonder why Pirelli didn't supply P Zero's instead of the P7000's? Wouldn't these have given them a better chance of winning the test?
So how did your tyres do?
John.

I've got Bridgestone S02's at the mo, so can't comment, but I think I will try Toyo's next. I have heard good things about them from a couple of friends who have them.

I heard from the start that S0-3's are no where near as good as SO-2's.
I remember evo tested an E30 M3 way back, which had Eagle F1's fitted - the impression i got from the review that the Goodyears suited the E30 perfectly, so i reckon they might be worth a go.

The eagle F1's i had on my Alfa were far better than the Pirelli P6000's ive got on my Golf.

Good thing is that the goodyears are ususally cheaper than bridgestones.
But if you can get hold of some SO-2's (they are very rare now) then jump at them - they are suppposed to be even better than F1's

Michelin Pilot Sport's?

I've got 'em on my E34 535i Sport (+ 17" Alpina's) - highly recommended.

The Michelin Pilot Sports came 5th. They were good in the dry handling and dry lateral grip, not great in the wet handling.
The finishing order was:
1. (Winner) Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
2. ContiSportContact
3. Toyo Proxes T1-S
4. Pirelli P7000
5. Michelin Pilot Sport
6. Dunlop SP Sport 9000
7. Bridgestone SO3's
8. Avon ZZ3

The response I got from EVO about the exclusion of some tyres, namely Yokohama AVS Sports and Pirelli P-Zeroe was that while they wanted to test 'High Performance' tyres, they classed some tyres as 'Ultra High Perfomance'.

Does that mean that the P-Zero's or the AVS Sports would have won?

I have Pirelli P6000s fitted to my Golf Tdi and I loathe them.

Although not "N" rated, I had Goodyear F1s fitted to my RS and I love them. Maybe not the last word in grip in wet or dry, but they definitely inspire confidence and seem to work extremely well.

So, when the P6000s are toast there's no hesitation for me - to be replaced with F1s as soon as I can.

There appear to be about 4 different threads discussing this at the moment, but I was interested to hear about the SO3's winning the dry lateral grip test 'cos I have just put a pair of SO3 (pole position) on my Scooby and went whizzing arounf the country roads North of Lancaster last week when it was dry, and I found the grip to be amazing (even for a scooby). Yet to try them in the wet, so will report back when I have.

i was rather surprised that the "Hi-Sung Arrowspeed" tyres I have currently fitted to the Fiesta (£26.99 each from your local Kwik-Fit) were not included in the test...............

I had contsport contacts on an XR4x4 - very good. Currently got Dunlop SP9000 on a BM 330D - not so good, although they have lasted well (25000 miles on the rears, looking like 30000 + on the fronts) and bloomin expensive! (255/35/18). Breakaway seems to be progressive - its not a sudden snap and I do like th ewet weather performance. Try the Contis next I think.

M-FIVE!
Did you e-mail EVO or what? I was thinking of writing them a letter / e-mailing them to ask why no P-zeros were there. Please let me know.

Just an e-mail.
I was surprised by the quick response.
I suppose it could just have been a junior answering on someone's behalf though as I just sent it to editor@evo.co.uk
