Happy but a couple of problems, help needed
Discussion
As per previous post S1 is now back on the road after 2 year SORN and had a great blast out in her today...I am still smiling and I have been back an hour! The drive has thrown up a couple of problems and I would be really grateful for any help/advice
1) Oil pressure - needle on gauge does not move until revs get to above 2000 and then settles correctly (no flutter). Could this be gauge, sender, oil change needed???
2) I have a misfire! other than checking plugs, dizzy, points etc any other tips. I could have manifold leak or air leak I suppose??
My mechanical knowledge is very limited and so before I go to the garage I would at least like to know what I am talking about!
In spite of the above.............it is good to have her back!!!

2. could be a "million" things, but won't be the points! try pulling each plug lead off (one at a time) see if any one cylinder makes a difference/ no difference?
But wear thick leather gloves or you will find out the hard way which cyliner is not firing. Is the misfire only when driving - eg. engine under load?
Cheers
Tony
Hi Tony, after a while she began to cut out as well, but yes the misfire was certainly there at lowish revs.... when I gave it the beans it wasnt noticable. She was also labouring in traffice when accelarator pressed (sort of felt like she was holding back?)
Sorry, crap at describing!

morning Steve.
have you checked the inside of your dizzy cap ??? the contacts can have a build-up of crud, also check for signs of arcing (copper coloured very fine lines). Could also be HT leads breaking down. As your P&J has been sitting for so long how about a new set of plugs and a new fuel filter. you could also try a fuel system cleaner just add to your fuel. It cleans while you drive.

similar issue on mine was a dodgey connector to the throttle pot - worth a wiggle to see if it fixes things as it did mine. And there ends my knowledge :-/
Update: Checked all plugs and leads and they seem fine. Have found that the sensor plate cover is split and is not held on by a jubilee clip, also there is a threaded rubber tube on this cover which has an old 4" bolt in it. Now I am sure that this needs to be air tight as a vacuum is needed and I am also sure that there should be a proper bolt that adjusts?
Does anyone know where I can purchase a new one?
Cheers

Not my engine, stole this pic from google. Not sure if this will come out right... basically the part that seems faulty is the big rubber cover on the end of the large plastic tube (sitting next to the inj system I think). If you can see it, there is a bolt sticking out of it around the 4pm mark on the cover. What the hell is this? and Where would I be able to get another from?
Steve
God I should not be let near an engine!!!!!

Click for link to picture of mine. Not a bolt but a blanking plate only. Definitely should be airtight, and definitiely should be held in place by a big jubilee clip. Might be the cause.

Thats the part Donny, thanks very much! Do you know what it is called and where I could possibly get another? Also, where your blanking plate is mine has a dirty great rusty bolt pushed into it but the rubber is threaded, I know that yours has a blanking plate but do you know what is usually there (as it is threaded)?

Hi Steve,
1) I bought an oil press sender off fleabay a few months back, it was under £15 inc post & packing & quite easy to fit, although you need to make up an earth wire to the nearby chassis earth point. It works a treat.
If you run a search on eBay you should find it, or Google Hose Fittings UK.
"Universal 1/8 NPT Male Oil Pressure Sender/ Sensor".
Next day delivery as well.
There is a thread on this forum about 9 May 2012 ish.
2) Not sure what you mean by 4" bolt, mine just has a plastic blanking plug, don't think there's anything adjustable there.
If that casing is split, it could cause running probs, but I would check engine electrical plugs/connectors for signs of corrosion & give em a good ole spray of WD40. Also check your dizzy cap contacts & rotor arm for crud, as per previous advice.
Just a thought, how much petrol in the tank? You could put a couple of gallons of (97 ron) Optimax in & see if it makes a difference.
Hope you get it sorted, it's much more fun to be driving it than poking about under the bonnet!

Thanks for the reply elnrobbo and the info on the sensor. Re the bad running I am really confident that it is the cover that needs replacing but I am at a loss as to where to buy a replacement. where yours has a blanking plate mine has a bolt and so I could get a rubber blank and sort this but the "shaft" of this section is split in two...is there an adhesive I can get to sort this (temporarily) at least I could still use her until a replacement could be found
Update, managed to fix mine with some sealant and a jubilee clip and also put a large jubilee clip on the actual part to make it airtight and the car now runs really well.
Still not sure what the part is or what it does but at least I can enjoy the car while I do my research.
Thanks for all your help
