Help, holiday shopping for August

I've been away without the OH twice this year (shame on me) with family/friends

Seeing as I'm running low on holiday to use at work, I thought we could make use of the August bank holiday and go somewhere from Saturday - Wednesday and have four nights/five days cheap and cheerful

However, cheap seems to have gone out the window. I can find hotels and self catering apartments for £100 or less but flights are looking around £400 each

Any tips on what websites to go through? Had a mosey through skyscanner, travel supermarket, teletext but it's still looking pricey or the flights available are going Saturday night / Wednesday morning and hacking into my five day window

Or, should I wait until the last minute and snap something up the week before? Is it really cheaper that way?

Please help, holiday gurus. Or I'll come home sunburnt and find the locks have been changed.
