Heading down to Lake Como at the end of the week.
Tomtom suggests going round the Luxembourg ring road (A6) then through Thionville (route map here http://goo.gl/maps/bm1h)

Google maps suggests avoiding Luxembourg completely and going through Longwy (route map here http://goo.gl/maps/l0WL

Not having any experience of that area I'm not sure which one to go for, so would appreciate any advice from anyone that's been through it. I'll be getting there at around 7am on Saturday so I'm guessing not too much traffic on either but wondered if one road was better than the other.

Living in Luxembourg, I would say that at 7am on a Saturday morning you would pretty much have the road to yourself. Going through Longwy is a slower road and likely to take much longer than staying on the motorway.

Only caveat would be there have been lots of weekend roadworks with overnight closures recently around the ringroad, but all with clear diversions, so not much of a problem.

Oh and remember to stop and fill up with fuel when passing through Lux - currently about 30cent a litre cheaper than France or Germany!! (€1.39 per litre petrol at the moment)

^^^Aaaah, another 'Bourg resident! thumbup

For the last few weeks every Friday/Saturday have been relatively heavy on the traffic heading through Lux to France, but, as posted above, avoid the Longwy route.

Oh, watch for the speed cameras around Thionville and towards Metz. STICK to the limit. I received a €45 fine in the post from France for my early morning transgression en route to Le Mans 24h: 121km/h in 110km limit.

Thanks for that both of you, was exactly the kind of information I needed.
Now just to get past all the Olympics stuff at this end!
