Performance and Supercar Rides - Grampian Transport Museum
Discussion
Grampian Transport Museum in Alford run a couple of Performance and Supercar events throughout the year.
This years dates are Wednesday 25th July and Thurday 9th August.
As well as getting to drive your car rapidly around the track as many times as you like with some enthusiastic passengers, you also get a £35 fuel voucher and a free BBQ
The event starts at 13:30 and finishes about 16:00, though the BBQ will be going from around 12:30
To register for this event, simply contact the museum directly via marketing@gtm.org.uk with details of your car and availability.
You also get the chance to explore the museum itself free of charge.
If you aren't doing anything on these dates, or can get an afternoon off work, then I can highly recommend it.
Some photos from a previous event:

If you just want to go along and enjoy some passenger rides in some fantastic cars, then you would be made very welcome by the museum

if it were on a weekend or at the very least set after the standard 9-5 then i would have been up for this, but will be working on both days
i understand that you have to think of the neighbours in Alford but you would get much more cars and customers by simply starting it at 6 or 7 for 2 hours. still, would really love to get in on this with the Sagaris at some point

I think that I'm provisionally signed up for the 9th of Aug one, pending my car being mapped. Still got the grass in the passenger footwell from last year!
Provisional... Haha heard that before!Oh and Hoover your car!

I'll be working for these sadly, managed the last one before the speedfest and it was a good afternoon!

Still working hard to get the car mapped. Not an easy process when it won't go on a dyno! And a minor oil leak to diagnose.Maybe not a dyno up here but track v road in Essex do 550lb/ft nobles on a regular basis, theyve also done old jaguar race cars and ford GT's(supercharged) with 600lb/ft at 1500rpm. They've mapped cars upto 1100hp and do all the work for/with mountune(roush) etc. If you want contact details let me know, they might not be familiar with vipers but worth asking. They are very good.

So are you saying that the only way is Essex?
On a more serious note, the issue isn't really the power or torque (Wallace have tuned 800+bhp cars on their dyno) but rather that the low gearing of the Viper means that it maxs out the top speed of the dyno in 4th gear (which I think is about 145mph).
Plus, it's much more appropriate to map a car on 'the road' since a dyno can never fully reproduce real world loading. I'm ideally looking to find a long strip where I can map the car safely and properly.

The only was is Essex!lol
They use 5th to map nobles and the rollers were turning at 164mph on my one so gearing/speed isn't a problem.
I understand in theory that on road mapping might be better as rollers never truly replicate road situations but in practice i disagree, very few people map an the road for a few reasons... 145mph on the road is wild! there is no way doing it on road that you could hold a high gear right through the revs without hesitation, do that 10/12 or more times safely to allow the mapper to make adjustments and tweak it, it's not a controlled situation so there will be variables and I'll bet not many people can trust 'some guy' they dont know to pilot a viper to 145 on the road while keeping his eyes on the laptop.
Best of luck but i suspect you'll only find mickey mouse mappers willing to do it on road.

When I say 'road' I mean drag strip. The mapper I have is probably one of the more experienced in Scotland, being MoTeC certified and INSISTS on doing it on asphalt. Mapped his own 900bhp+ Skyline that way. They use 5th to map nobles and the rollers were turning at 164mph on my one so gearing/speed isn't a problem.

On the 'road' is the best way to do it as far as I'm concerned, provided you can keep it safe (i.e., one person driving, another mapping and in a controlled environment).
