Road bike needed - for a lady!

My wife wants to move on up from her Boardman hybrid ladies bike to a racing bike, she has just done a 100km ride and fancies being a bit quicker.

I have no idea what to suggest, she is 5'9".

Any links to ebay or new bikes welcome!

Her budget is a grand max I would say.

The only real difference between 'normal' and women's bikes is a shorter reach, I think. Specialized do a range of women's geometry frames - Dolce and Ruby iirc. But depending on the shape of your OH she may find that normal men's bikes are fine.

Having been down this road myself recently the OH ended up with a Boardman Team Carbon FI which she loves.

Regarding the differences between a male and Female bike, they are many and varied including crank length and centre of gravity.

Sorted her out with a mens bike a Planet X Superlight Pro Carbon 54cms off ebay. Shimano Ultegra all round. They seem to go pretty well, and the bike fits me well too Very light indeed. Thanks for all the help, she just needs a pair of decent cleated shoes and she will be flying on this bike.

My OH has ordered me not to buy her a new bike...
