Just a very quick one - my A/C isn't working as it should, so probably just needs some new gas - can anybody do this easily enough, or is it a job for an OPC because it needs special Porsche approved gas or something?

An idea of cost would be good too - IIRC Kwik Fit offer regassing services, though I'm loathe to use them unless it really is very simple...

KwikFit. The ports are by the battery. 45 quid.

However, they told me mine had no leaks, yet OPC checked my car the other day and confirmed a leak on a compressor hose.

Kwik Fit will do more harm than good. Take it to someone that knows what they are doing.

Bit of a silly thing to say, especially given how simple this task is. However, I don't rate thier leak detection. But for 45 quid, I am not sure I am that bothered.

Given Kwik sts enviable reputation - I would take it anywhere but them! They employ strategically shaven Monkeys who could easily scratch the paintwork, over pressurise the system, damage the connections or break the plastic clips on the trim above the A/C connections ....

Silly? I don't think so - take it to a local Indie and have it done properly! smile

..Plenty of garages out there with an A/C service point for about 75 quid.. or your local OPC will charge you £225 for the same..!

Where is the OP based?

If it's in Surrey, I highly recommend AutoAir : http://www.autoairconditioningltd.co.uk/

Detected a leak on my 348 and replaced the compressor at a very good price. Also found the leak on my turbo - had a genuine condensor with him, and replaced that within an hour. Excellent service.

I'm Herts/Essex border - nearest Indy is PSR whom I know to be good - presumably/hopefully they have the bits needed to take care of it for me. Thanks for the replies all - I may avoid Kwik Fit due to mixed reviews, assuming PSR can do it and can do it for a similar-ish price.

Bit of a silly thing to recommended them too isn't it, given how they failed to detect your leak wink

My local Kwik Fit guys are fine for AC regassing and wheel balancing etc. I've never had a problem and they're really careful with my cars. They're really keen to work on something other than the run of the mill stuff too.

When did I 'recommend' them?

If you are fairly sure you don't have a leak, then they seem reasonable (given their leak detection seemingly doesn't work). If your unsure, use an Indy.

Can anyone explain why modern climate control systems need servicing?
And should I service my fridge at the same time?

Cheers.

Because systems in cars are naturally porous. This is because of all of the pipe connections and the vibrations etc. Your fridge is not subject to motion, and the connections etc are better (without tiny gaps/leaks).

Also more filters on automotive AC, which can smell like ste if not serviced.

Kwik-fit will do the job easily - their machine has a computer menu of type of cars and it pressurises accordingly.

My 996 was done a couple of years ago for £25 quid during the tail end of winter and I never had an issue.

£49 at Kwik Fit or £72 including the VAT at PSR automotive, both said they could do it on the spot, but I trust PSR more, so my wife is currently en route. PSR will also pop some dye in and do a leak test for me - I almost want it to fail so I can take it to Porsche to get them to fix under warranty, whilst I borrow a 991 Cab / new Boxster for the sun and my trip to Canterbury prison tomorrow!

ETA: or then again, maybe not - the extended (i.e. used car) warranty, doesn't cover some air-con parts apparently...
