Looking on the 'Cardomain' website at members cars listed under 'Chevrolet' and then sub. cat. 'Corvette' there is an entry for a Essex UK member with a blue RHD C5. This must be a really expensive conversion. Curious as to who does these conversions.

There's always talk about RHD drive Corvettes and rumours of one when a new model debuts.

In Australia they have to have RHD so there's no choice but let's hope they never make a RHD 'vette - it'll lose even more of its identity IMHO.

P.S. Don't know about C5 or C6 but in C4 it's a terrible idea because the engine is offset to the passenger side so the passneger gets a LOT less room than the driver. Just take the mats out and compare the widths if you don't believe me.

Another thing to bear in mind, there's one RHD C3 nad one RHD C4 that always seem to be for sale...

Nope it was a blue C5, read the thread again.

I don't like the idea of a RHD Corvette. Too much work, high cost, likely not a top quality job (read a past thread about this), and LHD has its own benefits. If Vettes were RHD then they would sell more which would make them more mainstream and less exclusive...which we don't want but GM is all about profit. RHD seems to be the biggest factor stopping someone coming from other cars which are RHD buying a Vette...so I agree with Malc. It would be better as Vettes get a better reputation (which I can live without) and we see faster Vettes. Maybe they should sell them here in VERY limited numbers but I doubt that.

Malc are you sure the engines over to the right hand side? I thought the reason for less room was the tunnel is larger on that side to accomodate the starter?

Have a look at the centreline of the plenum - I'm sure its in the middle of the car. It'd cause driveline headaches if the prop had to be offset/angled...

Tricky one that, it was a UK magazine test I think that I first saw mention of the engine being offset to one side.

The plenum may look central though there is a HUGE difference between the amount of available width for driver and passenger.

Mine's a manual and the gearbox has to be the largest on earth, maybe the housing is recessed for the clutch operation.

Postscript: Just gone out to the garage to check my car - it's easier to tell on mine because you can see how close each intercooler is to the wheel arches - THE ENGINE IS OFFSET! and actually very noticeably.

Check your car Francis, if your car has the air con sensor centrally located on top of the dash (like mine) and you line it up with the plenum, the engine is nothing like central, I'd say it's maybe 3 inches offset to the passenger side!

Malc.

PPS. The driveline (or prop) doesn't have to be angled, look at the design of the diff. The engine/gearbox/prop/diff are all correspondingly shifetd the same amount away from the driver!

Come to think of it the halfshafts on the C5 are significantly different lengths. Is that usual for RWD as I've never really looked at other RWD cars ?

When you insure your Yank, what's the first question they ask you? Is it lhd. Why? Because lhd cars get nicked less so rhd increases your premium.

Malcolm, the only reason why your engine is offset to one side is because of the fact that the only time you 'hoof' that Callaway is on the M25. Its the centrifugal force going around the M25 at high speed that has moved the engine and transmission off centre!

That's a more plausible explanation than Malc's.
