Large stone came up and made a mess of my Cayenne windscreen this morning. Is this something that Autoglass can do or am I better getting my OPC to handle it (even they use a subcontractor)? Will Porsche insist on an OPC repair from a warranty perspective?

As long as Autoglass or whoever used the right glass I'm not sure how Porsche would be any the wiser really.

I haven't needed to replace a windscreen for quite some time, but when/if I do, there's only one place I'd go to: http://www.glasstecauto.co.uk/

make sure that you ask for a dealer fit part/replacement screen with the Porsche crest or whatever.

Autoglass are asking if the screen is acoustic. Does anyone know? It is the standard factory fit.

Ignoring any internet stuff about AG, please have some self respect, have you listened to their patronising adverts on the radio? Surely they tell you all you need to know that they're aimed at people a bit hard of thinking who perhaps don't care if they get a shonky job on their mondeo after they 'demand' AG.

Glassman on here is the rolls royce of fitters...

I realise that. Thing is my insurer will only pay £100 of the cost if I don't use Autoglass and I think the cost is in the £600 range

It's time people started shopping to insurance companies that aren't complicit in the AG racket.

Must be illegal for them to force you to use a particular windscreen outfit, same as forcing you to use a bodyshop you don't want to patronise.

EU legislation for one.

But it's an incredibly complex (and sticky) subject.

OP: LV= is no problem (they use a 'supplier invoice control program' which gives us peasant independents access to them via prices prescribed by the same company that owns Autoglass. Funny that.). But for the sake of getting your screen repaired or replaced by your preferred supplier you do have a choice!

It's interesting that LV= would cut you off at the knees by telling you there's a £100.00 capping on what they'll pay if Autoglass is not used; why this collusion is what we all want to know? Especially since there is a pricing mechanism through which there is no such restriction!

As an aside, when LV's 'nominated' supplier couldn't locate a window giving an estimated time of four weeks to 'order one' for a rare (in the UK) imported car (they didn't even know what the car was at first). They didn't wave the "£100.00 limit" flag when the policyholder found someone who could not only locate the parts within the same day, but was ready to fit in within 48 hours!

I really don't understand these restrictions that pop up from the insco-supplier arrangement when the policyholder expresses his or her own preferences. Besides, my understanding is that it is these points that must be made reasonably available for the PH to consider, before inception?

All windscreens carry manufacturing data including a date. I realise they don't actually check this at an OPC warranty check but if the date of manufacture happens to be after the renewal then it's obvious the screen was replaced after the check. I'd be surprised if they ever check though - they'd have to be trying really hard to wriggle out of a really big claim for it even to cross their minds to check the windscreen (unless the claim was for water ingress).

There are ways of telling; brand of glass and tell-tale signs of fitting method.

Don't most OEMs state that warranty does not cover glass and seals?

I don't think they will; they'll be interested in selling an OEM windscreen and OEM (or approved) bonding materials, but I don't see any complications in terms of any warranties TBH. Not unless there was some serious negligence on the part of the installer.

AS for the £100 capped payment, if you press them on this they will relent or as suggested you can get your nominated supplier to pre authorise it. LV told me this £100 capped limit nonsense when a screen when and it is just plainly a lie designed to steer you in the direction of who they want you to use.

My advice normally is to put your money where your mouth is and pay for it yourself and submit them the bill at the same time as telling them you will sue them if they dont pay. The competition Act 1998 prohibits applying dissimilar trading conditions to suppliers and therefore distorting competition in the marketplace which renders the £100 cap for non approved suppliers unlawful.

The accoustic screen has an icon with an ear on it with 3 notes in it.

After encouragement from Paul at Glasstec it looks like LV have relented and have authorised Glasstec to replace the screen for the same excess as they would have charged me for using Autoglass. Took quite a lot of chasing but worth the effort I think.
