Working in London and living up north

I'm potentially eyeing up a move for work down to London. There's just nothing exciting going on up north especially in my field of work so I'm seeing what's around. I also have more contacts down there.
Does anyone do the commute down for the week and travel back on, say, a Friday night? I'm just wondering how much of a pain it is, likely costs, availability of train tickets etc.
I've looked at the driving option but would rather have something special tucked away for the weekends than use a diesel and throw 20k a year on. Virgin trains seem the obvious way forward.

If you're single, if the wage is very good, if you have a flat or B&B in a nice area and if you travel First Class and you can start lunchtime Monday and finish no later than Friday lunchtime, it's doable for maybe a year. Beyond that, your health may suffer. If you get a good job, just move? Good luck!
I know loads of people who do it. Mind you, I know some who go back to Italy, Spain, Portugal at the weekend. I did it myself for a year, Chancery Lane to Leeds. I found it better to rent a room for the full week, rather than hotels or whatever for the days you need, to cater for the days the trains are fecked, or you go out for impromptu beers. Plus you keep all your work stuff there, so travel light.

Assuming you're talking about communual rooms, these is a daft idea.Also I may be wrong, but certainly when I have stayed in youth hostels in the USA, there's a restriction on the number of nights you can stay in a set period (a year?).. 2 weeks sounds familiar?

Could be the way forward. Decent rooms in a share on a decent line look to be around £600 a month. It would certainly give the option to leave stuff there for the weekend and pack light to go back at weekends. Just seen this topic, so apologies for late reply.
A guy I work with lives just outside Liverpool and works with me in the City of London. He pays around £300 a month in train fares and also pays around £350 a month for a room in Forest Gate. He's got a partner and two small children. He has said he'll give it a year and assess whether it's a complete move down south or get another job back up north. The biggest problem he said is the house prices in the South compared to just outside Liverppol. At present this works for him but it must put a strain on the relationship.
