Also budget for an amp, strap, cable etc. If £300 is realistic, look at Epiphone Les Paul and SG models. If you prefer single coil sounds, Yamaha Pacificas are good also. Go to somewhere like GuitarGuitar if there's a branch near you. I find small music shops, while handy, often stock the really cheap stuff. It's a false economy when 20% more ££ will open up a world where the guitars are credible and inspiring musical instruments that will, if needs be, not be worthless if you decide to sell. The aforementioned will also be much easier to live with and play, and tend to sound noticeably nicer, than the very cheap (<£150) stuff.

I started with a Yamaha Pacifica too. Thoroughly recommended for a 1st guitar

^^^^ This. I was in the same boat last year. My pacifica was £130 or so. I find it much easier to play than my old acoustic; just seem to be able to hit the more difficult chords better. Must be the string tension and the narrower neck or something. But definitely try a few out to see which is the easiest to play.
