As I have just recently bought a turbo rwd car, I am trying to relearn how to drive a 'proper' car.

While power oversteer may be seen as a right of passage, its bloody scary on a real road with dry stone dykes either side, or 6inch high kerbs around you.

So, hypothetically speaking, is there anywhere around the Aberdeen area where a person can explore limited slip angles in relative safety? Both to me (and my wheels) and the public.

I am looking for a very quiet, slow corner with plenty run off.

I am not trying to be 2fast2furious around every roundabout going up Anderson drive, just a mature owner looking to have a small bit of safe fun, if possible.

Looking further afield, do any of the usual suspects (crail, knockhill etc) have suitable areas/courses?

cheers

On public roads... Nowhere, get to somewhere like crail or Knockhill.

Bear in mind how many bikers and fast cars use the country roads around Aberdeen. It's got disaster written all over it.

Can't think of anywhere offhand, but i'm not 100% that would be the case depending on how stupid you want to get.
For higher speeds I'd tend to agree with Hollowpockets, but to ensure you don't stack it in town, I don't see why a SENSIBLE bit of farting about on confirmed clear roads should be an issue.
Plenty of places you might be able to try catching a slide, particularly in the wet, but in the dry with big power you'll end up bending something off a kerb at least.
This post has been sponsored by copious beer, so if it is stupid please treat it as such! hehe

East tullos down next to woodgroup, costco westhill + round about near there. These are just very open areas and I do not suggest anything other than legal activity takes place at these locations.

Knockhill would be perfect to explore the handling, especially in reverse. Infact there are spaces available tonight I believe.

Knockhill in the wet is the perfect practice ground, I'll be there tonight smile

knockhill, or any suitable offroad area, is obviously the best place to do this, but knockhill is a 2 hour drive each way.

there must be a nice hairpin like corner, like the magazines use, nearer than that.

And i dont think high speed dry corners are the place for this either - 20mph in todays rain is more than sufficient.

I can never understand, with the amount of disposable income and car nuts in Aberdeen(shire), that there isnt anything for us up this end of the culdesac(A90).

Fintray is actually part of the owner's farm and is therefore only open to the sprint events.

there is a cork screw bit of road west of Stonehaven that is simply magical for any kind of fun driving, but u need a spotter on a mobile at the exit of the last hairpin to make sure no-one is coming.

it would certainly be an idea, for anyone with the startup cash, to create a drift track/assault course in Aberdeen. the bashers at the beach alone would ensure a steady flow of funds, not to mention the other attention and advertising revenue you could get... used tyre sales? (FYI: you probably already know this but if you are going to be practicing ruining ur tyres, drifting, then it might be an idea to go to a scrapyard and buy some used tyres) not for road use obviously.

the only problem would be in finding a place large enough to make the track/tarmaced area. then getting round any noise complaints. and insurance. and maintenance etc...

I've heard sometimes it's possible to sneak into the car park at the AECC...maybe even with a few mini cones (it's a very large expanse otherwise)...

Not that I would suggest or condone such a thing.

I believe you can hire out the Alford track.

I actually looked into hiring out crail last year - with 20 upwards cars it is not that bad of a price, but they only have selected dates available, and these fill up very fast at start of year.

Alford would be ok, especially without the speedfest crowds looking for you to crash.....

Place at Alford has events where you can take your own car, not sure how often they run these though. And of course Alford is a bit pants as a racing circuit.

No, ... and if you try something like this on a bit of road I happened to be on at the same time, ... I'll be making a phone call without hesitation.

I 'heard' thats sometimes possible too, but everytime I've 'happened' to be passing by (ahem) the gates always shut. Its a pity, as that sort of space is suitable for a mini car limts-type thing if it was properly organised... Although perhaps there's residential concerns.

I for one would like to try some decent speed wet / cold weather cornering somewhere localish, but I'm not preparred to try this on the open roads as I fear the car will bite back.. (VX220).

Not sure what car the OP drives, but any wide open roundabout with no traffic should be all that you need.

Bit harsh given the OP specifically stated he didn't want to endanger anyone or himself.

Sadly asides from the odd quiet roundabout at under 15mph the OP is out of luck, even our local PH runs are around 7/8 tenths tops, so only option is take it to Knockhill/Crail or Alford.

Do they ever open Fintray hillclimb for anything other than hillclimbs?

I'll be at Forrestburn next week for a "fun night" where they let you have a blast up the hill, Fintray, whilst maybe not too wide, sounds like exactly the sort of tight, well surfaced corner you're looking for.
when is this?

public liability insurance is the killer.
