Puncture prevention.

Okay, went to take the bike out last night for a bit and was thwarted from the off by a thorn which had punctured the inner tube. Luckily I was able to rob the other bike of its inner tube and away I went quite happy.
As I dont have any spare inner tubes I went to order some this morning and found Slime Lite Self healing inner tubes. Now they are far from being the cheapest tool in the box, but I thought Id ask the question whether these (or similar) are actually worth the expense to save being stranded whilst out, or is just carrying a spare tube a better option?

I've not had a single puncture in the last year since I switched to Slime tubes on my hardtail. Done around 1500 off road miles in that time.
Can't be sure if any punctures have sealed as I've not had the tyres off but chances are I'd have had more than one in that time.
They do weigh more cos of the stuff inside (and I carry a spare tube and puncture kit in my Camelbak) but I'd rather not be pushing my bike home for over an hour like it did the ride before I bought them.
