Camper van hire Australia

We're flying to Oz next month and looking at renting a camper for 10 days. Anyone have any experiences of hiring out there? Found several companies that do it, ranging from $440 to $800+ just for 2 berths! I'm also very wary of putting $3000 deposit down via my credit card as I can imagine the horror stories. But most places want an extra $25 a day to wave the excess, which does add up.

Basically it looks like a mine field any help would be much appreciated.
