Redundancy

Hi Guys

I am in the unfortunate position of losing my job due to redundancy.

I currently work in a school as an ICT Technician.

I have been applying for jobs and had interviews but no luck yet.

If any of you could give me any advice where to go from here, or if any of you may know of somewhere that a position may be available, could you please let me know!

Your post suggests that your CV has passed muster and has filtered you to interviews. This is a positive. So what happened at interview? Have you had feedback? How did you feel they went? We're you not selected on competency, outlook or strategic fit? Have you had your interview technique analysed?

I do get feedback and it seems that I interview well. I always seem to loose out to those who have more experience though.

Some interviews have not gone well, due to on one occasion a aggressive interviewer and on another what they actually wanted was a lot more advanced than my current knowledge, I got the feeling I was there to make up numbers.

My CV does appear to be doing its job although I am considering paying for it to be professionally written.

Notwithstanding the interview practice, I'd be really disappointed if I were being selected in just to make up the numbers; I assume you met the spec otherwise you wouldn't have applied? It's a tough market. Jobs are out there but the number of applicants around means companies are able to hold out for the exact person they want.

I was binned 6 months ago - I've had about a dozen interviews since I guess. The important thing is to try and keep positive. Take those interviews you've had and look at them - have more than one of them asked for a specific skill/qualification? If so it may be worth taking a course to get that skill, or at least tinkering with that system so you have some knowledge of it that you can "big up" in interviews.

I just thought well I am here so may as well do it. I only apply for jobs that I feel I am able to do, I do not see the point in wasting my and other peoples time by applying for jobs that I would not be able to do.

I am willing to get qualifications that would help me, its the cost of them that I am unable to afford due to my current salary. This may be easier when I am redundant as I may be able to get assistance from the job centre for training, I am not sure if they cover technical qualifications though!

Have you looked at IT contracting? it would get you some exposure to other other industries and sectors. The money will be normally be better as well.

Search on Jobserve as a start, and apply for everything that suits. Always include a covering letter pointing out why you fit the bill, as the agent is unlikely to understand the job fully.

Would just like to say that I completely sympathise with you, as I was also given notice of redundancy last week.

Hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to find work in the industry I am in, but its a crap time nonetheless and am now having to go through the frantic job searching and CV updating. Good luck to you and I hope you find your next move that suits you and will lead to better things.
